Marrying a Greek citizen does not automatically make you Greek. What marriage gives you is a shorter path to naturalization: if you have a child with your Greek spouse and live legally in Greece for three continuous years, you can apply for Greek citizenship by marriage. Without a shared child, the marriage still helps you settle in Greece, but you follow the standard route and need seven years of legal residence before you can apply.1Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic. Who Qualifies for the Three-Year Track
The three-year residency track is open only to foreign spouses who have a biological or legally adopted child with the Greek citizen.2Hellenic Ministry of the Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen Those three years must be continuous and legal: you held a valid residence permit the entire time and physically lived in Greece without extended gaps. Any lapse in your permit can reset the clock or disqualify you, and the Ministry of Interior cross-checks your timeline against immigration records.
Your Greek spouse must be registered in a Municipal Roll when you apply, and the marriage must be valid under Greek law. Authorities also assess whether the marriage is genuine, looking at shared daily life, financial ties, and evidence that the relationship is more than a paper arrangement.
If your wedding took place outside Greece, register it with the Special Civil Registry in Athens before you file for citizenship. Registration can be handled by either spouse, a lawyer with power of attorney, or another person with a legitimate interest. Late registration carries a small fee: 5.40 euros between 90 and 180 days after the ceremony, and 15.60 euros after that.3Hellenic Ministry of the Interior. Marriage Registrations The money is minor, but an unregistered marriage can hold up your spousal residence permit and, downstream, your citizenship timeline.
Which Residence Permits Count
Only certain permits count toward the qualifying years. Temporary permits, tourist visas, and undocumented stays do not, no matter how long you have been in the country.2Hellenic Ministry of the Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen The Ministry accepts:
- Spouse of a Greek or EU citizen. This is the standard permit for married applicants, valid for five years, with no meaningful issuance fee.4Decentralized Administration of Attica. Spouse or Partner of a Greek Citizen – Initial Issuance or Change of Residence Purpose
- Long-term or second-generation resident permits.
- Parent of a minor Greek citizen.
- Recognized refugee or subsidiary protection status.
- Stateless person status.
The Language and Civics Exam
Before you apply, you must earn the Knowledge Adequacy Certificate for Naturalization (PEGP). The exam has two parts: a Greek language section at B1 level covering reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and a knowledge section on Greek geography, history, culture, and political institutions.5Gov.gr. Participate in the Exams of the Knowledge Adequacy Certificate for Naturalization (PEGP)
B1 means functioning independently in Greek: handling everyday conversations, describing experiences, and following clear speech on familiar topics. The passing score is 70%. Applicants aged 62 and older may take the exam orally before a special committee. People who completed Greek secondary education are exempt. The exam fee is about 150 euros, paid through the electronic paravolo system. There is no official government prep course, so most applicants self-study or hire a tutor.
Documents You Need to File
Greek citizenship files are documentation-heavy, and a single missing item creates delays. Core documents include:
- Your birth certificate, authenticated with an Apostille and officially translated into Greek.6Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece. Registrations – Declarations (Birth – Marriage – Death)
- The marriage certificate, registered with Greek civil authorities.
- A Municipal Roll certificate for your Greek spouse.
- Criminal record clearances from your country of origin and from Greek judicial authorities. Sentences over six months for certain offenses, or over one year for any intentional crime, are disqualifying.2Hellenic Ministry of the Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen
- Your PEGP certificate.
- A valid residence permit covering the full qualifying period.
- Passport copies (all pages) and photographs.
Every foreign-language document must be translated into Greek through a consulate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ translation service, or a qualified Greek lawyer. Check names, dates, and spellings across every document before submission; discrepancies trigger administrative delays.
Filing, Fees, and the Interview
You submit the completed file to the municipality where you live. That office verifies the paperwork and forwards it to the Ministry of Interior, and a local police authority provides an opinion on public order and security.1Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic. Law 3284 – Ratification of the Greek Nationality Code Payment is made through the electronic e-paravolo platform, and the total cost including the PEGP exam fee comes to roughly 700 euros. It is non-refundable regardless of outcome.
Once the Ministry has reviewed your file, you are called to an in-person interview with a three-member panel from the General Secretariat for Citizenship. Each interviewer must have at least five years of experience as a case rapporteur.7General Secretariat of Citizenship of the Ministry of the Interior. Practical Interview Guide for Verification of Substantive Requirements of Greek Citizenship The panel assesses three areas from Article 5A of the Greek Citizenship Code:8Global Citizenship Observatory. Greek Citizenship Code
- Social integration: family ties, community involvement, volunteer work, whether your children attend Greek schools.
- Economic integration: stable employment, tax compliance, insurance contributions, property ownership.
- Political awareness: basic familiarity with Greek institutions and modern political history, and participation in local elections where eligible.
Interviewers may not ask about your personal political beliefs, religious views, or philosophical preferences. The session is documented in official minutes, and you must consent to the processing of your personal data before it begins. If your application is rejected, you can challenge the decision in administrative court.
Timeline, Decision, and Oath
The official target is one year, but expect two to four years from submission to final decision.2Hellenic Ministry of the Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen Processing speed varies by region and by case complexity, and there is no way to expedite an application once filed.
When the Minister of Interior approves your file, the decision is published in the Government Gazette. Publication alone does not make you a citizen. You must take the oath of allegiance within one year of publication, or the decision is automatically revoked and you start over.1Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic. Law 3284 – Ratification of the Greek Nationality Code The oath is taken before the General Secretary of the Region or another delegated official, and pledges allegiance to Greece and observance of the Constitution and laws. Once you have sworn it, you are Greek and can apply for the identity card and passport that give you full EU rights.
What Changes After You Naturalize
Greece does not require you to give up your existing citizenship. The Nationality Code treats renunciation as voluntary, so you can hold both passports.1Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic. Law 3284 – Ratification of the Greek Nationality Code Whether your home country allows it is a separate question. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and most EU member states permit dual nationality; countries such as India, China, and Malaysia generally do not. Check your own country’s rules before you start.
If you are male and become Greek between the ages of 19 and 45, you have a military service obligation. Conscription applies to naturalized citizens just as it does to those born Greek.9Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. National Service Information Greek citizens who live permanently abroad can postpone service indefinitely as long as they maintain permanent resident status in another country, and the obligation lifts at 45. Plan accordingly if you are a man under 45 intending to live in Greece full-time.
On taxes, Greek residency is based on where you live, not your passport, so most applicants are already paying Greek tax on worldwide income during the qualifying period. Naturalization does not change that status, but it does anchor your relationship with the Greek tax system for as long as you remain a resident. Greece has tax treaties with the United States, the United Kingdom, and most EU member states to prevent double taxation on the same earnings, and a local advisor familiar with cross-border issues is worth consulting before your finances get complicated.
