To get Greek citizenship, you generally take one of four paths: descent from a Greek parent or grandparent, naturalization after several years of legal residence, a shortened naturalization route as the spouse of a Greek citizen with a shared child, or, for children of foreign parents, a conditional path tied to their parents’ residence or their own schooling in Greece. Greece traces nationality mainly through bloodline rather than birthplace, and it lets you keep whatever passport you already hold.
You Can Keep Your Current Citizenship
Greece places no restrictions on holding multiple nationalities. Becoming Greek does not require you to give up your American, Canadian, Australian, or any other passport, and Greece will not revoke your citizenship if you later acquire a third. The only ways to lose Greek citizenship are voluntary renunciation or a finding that it was obtained fraudulently. Confirm your current country also permits dual nationality, and the decision to pursue a Greek passport carries no risk to your existing status.
Citizenship by Descent
If you were born to at least one Greek parent, you are already a Greek citizen by operation of law. This is true even if your parent never registered you in Greece or exercised their own citizenship. The Greek Citizenship Code, governed by Law 3284/2004, treats descent as an inherent right rather than a government grant. Consulates don’t give you citizenship in this scenario; they document a status you already hold.1Hellenic Republic – Greece in the USA. Greek Citizenship
There is no formal generational limit. You can trace a claim through a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent. The further back you reach, the harder the paperwork gets. Documenting your father’s Greek passport is one project; proving a grandparent’s Greek nationality through municipal records from the early 1900s is another entirely.
What Documents You Need
You are building an unbroken paper trail from yourself back to the Greek ancestor. That means birth, marriage, and death certificates for every person in the direct line, each showing full names, dates, and places clearly enough that one generation links cleanly to the next. The anchor of the file is proof of the ancestor’s Greek nationality itself, usually a municipal registration record from Greece or, for male ancestors, military service records. Greek consulates abroad and municipal archives in Greece can help locate these.1Hellenic Republic – Greece in the USA. Greek Citizenship
Claims Through a Greek Mother Before 1982
Until May 8, 1982, Greek law passed citizenship only through fathers. If your mother was Greek but married a foreign man before that date, any children of that marriage were not automatically Greek. A separate declaration procedure now exists for people born before May 8, 1982, to a Greek mother married to a foreigner, letting them claim Greek nationality retroactively.1Hellenic Republic – Greece in the USA. Greek Citizenship If your claim runs through a grandmother’s line and crosses this date, expect extra steps. Children born after 1982 to a Greek mother inherit citizenship automatically, the same as through a Greek father.
Citizenship by Naturalization
Foreign nationals who have lived lawfully in Greece long enough and can show they’ve integrated into Greek society can apply for citizenship by naturalization. Required residence depends on your nationality and family situation.2Greek Government Document. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen?
- Non-EU citizens: seven years of continuous, lawful residence in Greece.
- EU citizens: three years of continuous, lawful residence.
- Spouses of Greek citizens with a shared child: three years of continuous, lawful residence.
- Recognized refugees and stateless persons: three years of continuous, lawful residence.
The residency period must be completed before you apply, and you need a valid residence permit throughout. Applicants also have to show financial stability through recent tax returns and an active social security number.2Greek Government Document. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen?
Criminal Record Bars
You cannot apply for naturalization if you have been convicted and sentenced to more than six months for certain categories of crimes, or to more than one year for any crime committed intentionally. A criminal record certificate from your country of origin, translated into Greek and authenticated, is part of every application.2Greek Government Document. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen?
The Knowledge Adequacy Exam
Naturalization applicants must pass a written exam, the Certificate of Knowledge Adequacy for Naturalization. It tests Greek language ability at the B1 level (enough to handle everyday conversation and straightforward texts) and basic knowledge of Greek geography, history, culture, and political institutions.3Gov.gr. Participate in the Exams of the Knowledge Adequacy Certificate for Naturalisation The exam was introduced by Law 4735/2020 and must be passed before you submit your application.
The Naturalization Interview
After you file, a Naturalization Committee schedules an interview to assess how well you’ve integrated into Greek life. It is not a second exam on history or geography. The committee asks about your personal circumstances: where you live, your family ties to Greek citizens, your work history, any community or civic involvement, and whether your tax and social insurance payments are current.4General Secretariat of Citizenship of the Ministry of the Interior. Practical Interview Guide for the Verification of the Substantive Requirements of Article 5A of the Greek Citizenship Code The committee cannot question your political opinions, religious beliefs, or trade union membership.
Citizenship Through Marriage
Marrying a Greek citizen does not automatically make you Greek. Article 30 of the Greek Citizenship Code is direct: marriage alone does not entail the acquisition or loss of Greek citizenship.5Greek Citizenship Code. Greek Citizenship Code What marriage does is shorten the path. If you are married to a Greek citizen and have a child together, you qualify for naturalization after three years of continuous legal residence in Greece rather than the standard seven.
You still meet the other naturalization requirements: the knowledge exam, a clean criminal record, financial documentation, and the interview. If your marriage took place outside Greece, register it with Greek municipal records before applying. You’ll also need your spouse’s Greek identity card or municipal registration as proof of their citizenship.
Citizenship for Children Born in Greece
Greece does not grant automatic citizenship to everyone born on its soil. It offers a conditional path for children of foreign parents who have established real roots in the country, and there are two separate routes.
Parental Residency Route
A child born in Greece to two foreign parents can acquire Greek citizenship if both parents have legally and continuously resided in Greece for at least five years before the child’s birth. The parents submit a joint declaration and register the child at the municipal registry within three years of the birth. If the child was born before both parents had completed five years of lawful residence, they can submit the declaration once they reach the five-year mark, and the child acquires citizenship at that point.5Greek Citizenship Code. Greek Citizenship Code Both parents must meet the residency threshold, not just one.
School Attendance Route
A child of foreign parents who completes at least six grades at a Greek school while lawfully and permanently residing in Greece can also acquire citizenship. The parents submit the declaration and registration within three years of the child finishing the sixth grade.5Greek Citizenship Code. Greek Citizenship Code The child does not need to have been born in Greece for this route to apply.
How to Submit Your Application
Whichever route you use, the final stage follows a similar pattern: gather documents, translate and authenticate them, submit, and wait.
Preparing Documents
Every foreign-issued document must be officially translated into Greek and carry an Apostille stamp, or equivalent certification for countries not party to the Apostille Convention. That covers birth certificates, marriage certificates, criminal record checks, and any court documents. On descent applications, apostilling and translating documents from older generations is usually the slowest part, so start early.
Where to File
If you live in Greece, you submit to the Regional Directorate of Citizenship covering your area. If you live abroad, you file through the nearest Greek consulate. Both typically require an in-person appointment.
Fees
Fees depend on the pathway and your circumstances:2Greek Government Document. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen?
- Non-EU naturalization, first-time application: €700.
- EU citizen naturalization: €100.
- Refugees and stateless persons: €100.
- Children born in Greece, school attendance pathway: €100.
Processing Times and the Oath Deadline
Processing times vary. Descent applications through a parent can take roughly six to twelve months when paperwork is clean; claims through a grandparent often stretch to two or three years because records take longer to verify. Naturalization applications typically take two to four years after submission, partly because of exam scheduling and interview backlogs. Marriage-based applications fall between about a year and a half and three years.
If your application is approved, the decision is published in the Government Gazette. You then have one year to take the oath of allegiance. Miss that window and the naturalization order is revoked.6Greek Citizenship Code (Law 3284/2004). Greek Citizenship Code The oath is typically administered by a regional government official or, abroad, by a Greek consul. Once taken, your citizenship certificate is issued and you can apply for a Greek passport and national identity card.
Military Service for Male Citizens
This catches many new citizens off guard. All male Greek citizens between the ages of 19 and 45 are required to serve in the Greek Armed Forces, regardless of where they live.7Hellenic Republic – Greece in the USA. National Service Information The standard term is 12 months, with a shorter nine-month term for certain border units or special forces.8Hellenic Ministry of National Defence. Presentation of the Draft Law – Roadmap for the Transition
If you live permanently outside Greece, you can apply through a Greek consulate for a deferral, granted via a Certificate of Permanent Resident Abroad. That requires at least 11 consecutive years of residence outside Greece, or at least 7 years with continuous full-time employment abroad.9Gov.gr. If you don’t qualify for a deferral or exemption, you fall into the category of draft evader abroad. You can still travel to Greece, but only for up to 30 days per calendar year, and passport renewals become more complicated.7Hellenic Republic – Greece in the USA. National Service Information A defense reform bill submitted in late 2025 raised the age limit for buying out military service from 33 to 40 and set the buyout cost at €1,500 per month of service owed. Parents of dual-citizen sons weighing whether to register them in Greece should factor these obligations in early.
