How to Get UK Citizenship as an American: Visa to Naturalisation

To get UK citizenship as an American, you move to the UK on a visa that leads to settlement, live there lawfully for five years (or three if you’re married to a British citizen), obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain, and then apply to naturalise. You keep your US citizenship throughout. The UK allows dual nationality outright,1GOV.UK. Dual Citizenship and the US State Department’s position is that “A U.S. citizen may naturalize in a foreign state without any risk to their U.S. citizenship.”2U.S. Department of State. Dual Nationality Taking the oath to King Charles III at your citizenship ceremony does not cost you your American passport; the State Department presumes Americans intend to keep their US nationality when they naturalise abroad.3U.S. Department of State. Accepting, Serving in, or Performing Duties of a Position with the Government of a Foreign State

Expect the whole path to take six to eight years and cost well over £5,000 in Home Office fees alone. Here’s what each stage requires.

Step One: A Visa That Leads to Settlement

You cannot start the citizenship clock without a visa that permits long-term residence. Three routes cover most Americans:

  • Skilled Worker visa. You need a job offer from a UK employer with a sponsorship licence. Five years on this visa makes you eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain.4GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Overview
  • Spouse or partner visa. Available if your partner is a British citizen or is settled in the UK. The initial visa runs two years and nine months; you extend once and reach ILR at the five-year mark.5GOV.UK. Family Visas – Apply as a Partner or Spouse
  • Global Talent visa. For recognised or emerging leaders in academia, arts and culture, or digital technology. ILR eligibility comes at three or five years depending on the endorsement.6GOV.UK. Apply for the Global Talent Visa – Overview

One route Americans sometimes ask about is closed to them: the UK Ancestry visa requires Commonwealth citizenship, and the United States is not a Commonwealth country.7GOV.UK. UK Ancestry Visa – Overview A British grandparent alone won’t help unless you also hold citizenship somewhere in the Commonwealth.

Step Two: The Residency Years

Under the standard route, you must have lived in the UK for at least five years and held ILR for at least 12 months before you can apply for citizenship.8GOV.UK. Check if You Can Become a British Citizen Because most visas make you wait five years for ILR, the realistic timeline from arrival to citizenship application is six to seven years.

If you’re married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, the qualifying residency drops to three years, and you can apply for citizenship as soon as you receive ILR with no additional 12-month wait.9GOV.UK. Absence Limits That Trip People Up

The Home Office counts physical presence, not visa validity. On the five-year route, absences from the UK must not exceed 450 days total, with no more than 90 days out in the final 12 months before you apply. On the three-year spousal route, the total cap is 270 days, with the same 90-day limit in the final year.9GOV.UK. Apply for Citizenship if Your Spouse Is a British Citizen – Eligibility and Fees If you’ve gone over, waiting a few months so the over-limit trips fall outside the qualifying window is often the cleanest fix.

If a Parent Is British, Check Your Status First

Before you go through the residency route, look at your family. British citizenship passes down one generation to children born outside the UK, so if a parent was born in the UK or naturalised before your birth, you may already be a British citizen automatically, or eligible to register as one.10GOV.UK. Apply for Citizenship if You Have a British Parent – Who Can Apply

A British grandparent, on its own, is not enough. Because automatic transmission only works for one generation born abroad, the chain breaks unless your parent registered or claimed their own citizenship before you were born. If they didn’t, you’re back on the residency track.

The Life in the UK Test (and the English Test You Don’t Take)

US citizens are exempt from the English language proficiency requirement for citizenship. The United States is on the Home Office’s list of majority English-speaking countries, so you don’t need a test score or an English-taught degree, only the exemption form submitted with your application.11GOV.UK. Prove Your Knowledge of English for Citizenship and Settling – Exemptions

There is no such exemption from the Life in the UK test. If you’re between 18 and 65, you must pass it: 24 questions on British history, government, traditions and customs, computer-based, 45 minutes, 18 correct answers required to pass, £50 per attempt.12GOV.UK. Life in the UK Test The history questions tend to catch people out. You can retake as many times as you need, paying £50 each time.

The Good Character Requirement

Every adult applicant goes through a good character assessment covering criminal history, immigration compliance, and financial conduct.13GOV.UK. Good Character Requirement (Accessible) The Home Office has broad discretion here, so it’s worth knowing what actually causes problems.

Even a fine counts as a criminal conviction. A recent or substantial one, or one that reflects badly on your character, will normally lead to refusal. Fixed penalty notices such as parking tickets usually don’t form part of your record, though a pattern of them within a short period can be treated as evidence of disregard for the law.14GOV.UK. Nationality Policy – Good Character Requirement

Debt on its own is not disqualifying if you’re repaying or making reasonable efforts to. Bankruptcy caused by circumstances beyond your control is generally treated sympathetically, and an application can proceed if it was discharged at least ten years ago. What sinks applications is deliberately running up debt with no intention to repay, hiding assets in bankruptcy, or unpaid taxes.14GOV.UK. Nationality Policy – Good Character Requirement Any deception with the Home Office, including undisclosed convictions or false statements in earlier immigration applications, is treated severely and almost always leads to refusal.

Applying to Naturalise: Forms, Fees, and Biometrics

You apply online through GOV.UK on Form AN. The form asks for a detailed residency history, character declarations, and supporting documents: your passport, proof of residency, your Life in the UK pass notification, and your marriage certificate if applying on the spousal route.

The fees, as of 8 April 2026, are heavy:

That’s £1,889 for the citizenship stage. The ILR application you paid for earlier costs £3,226, so the settlement-plus-citizenship total exceeds £5,000 before you count the visa fees and Immigration Health Surcharge you paid across your years on a work or family visa.15GOV.UK. Home Office Immigration and Nationality Fees, 8 April 2026

After submitting online, you have 45 working days to book a biometrics appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) location to give fingerprints and a facial photograph.16GOV.UK. UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services

Processing and the Citizenship Ceremony

The Home Office aims to decide naturalisation applications within six months, and will notify you if yours will take longer.17GOV.UK. Apply for Citizenship if You Have Indefinite Leave to Remain – After You’ve Applied Your passport and original documents may be held during this period, so avoid booking travel that depends on them.

If approved, you’ll be invited to a citizenship ceremony. Attendance is mandatory for adults and must happen within three months of the invitation. You’ll make either a religious oath or a secular affirmation of allegiance to King Charles III, followed by a pledge.18GOV.UK. Citizenship Ceremonies – Guidance Notes (English and Welsh) Most ceremonies are group events run by your local council; private ceremonies are available in many areas for an added fee that varies by council. You leave with your certificate of naturalisation, which is your proof of citizenship until you get a passport.

Getting Your First British Passport

A first adult British passport costs £102 online or £115.50 by post as of 8 April 2026.19GOV.UK. New Fees for Passport Applications The online application requires a digital photo and someone to confirm your identity, and first-time adult applicants may be called for an interview.20GOV.UK. Getting Your First Adult Passport – Apply Online Keep your naturalisation certificate somewhere safe: you send it in with the application, and it’s the only original proof of your citizenship.

The US Tax Bill Doesn’t Stop

Becoming British does not release you from the US tax system. The United States taxes based on citizenship, not residence, so you must keep filing US federal returns reporting your worldwide income every year while also paying UK tax as a British resident.21Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad

Two provisions usually prevent double taxation. The foreign earned income exclusion lets you exclude up to $132,900 of earned income from US tax for the 2026 tax year.22Internal Revenue Service. Figuring the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion The foreign tax credit offsets US liability against UK tax already paid. Most Americans in the UK end up owing the IRS little or nothing, but the filing itself remains mandatory.

Separately, if your UK bank, investment, or pension accounts combined ever exceed $10,000 at any point in the year, you must file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) with FinCEN. Penalties for missed FBARs are steep even when the failure isn’t willful.23FinCEN. FBAR Filing Requirement

Children Born While You’re Still on a Visa

A child born in the UK after 1982 is only British at birth if at least one parent had ILR, right of abode, or settled status at that moment.24GOV.UK. Check if You’re a British Citizen – Your Parents’ Immigration Status When You Were Born If you were still on a work visa when your child was born, they aren’t automatically British.

Once you or your partner becomes settled or naturalises, the child becomes entitled to register as British under Section 1(3) of the British Nationality Act using Form MN1. The child must be under 18 when you apply, and children aged 10 or older must also meet the good character requirement. The Home Office aims to process these within six months.25GOV.UK.
