To get your phone number off spam call lists, start by registering it free at donotcall.gov, then layer on data broker opt-outs, your phone’s built-in call filtering, and your carrier’s spam protection. The National Do Not Call Registry is the fastest single step, but it only binds legitimate telemarketers. Scam operations ignore it, which is why a working plan has to attack the lists themselves, the calls at the network level, and the calls at your handset.
Register on the National Do Not Call Registry
The registry is run by the Federal Trade Commission and backed by the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 47 U.S. Code 227 – Restrictions on Use of Telephone Equipment Go to donotcall.gov, enter the phone number you want protected, and confirm through the email link. It costs nothing, and it covers landlines and mobile numbers.2National Do Not Call Registry. National Do Not Call Registry
Telemarketers are required to scrub their calling lists against the registry and drop your number. That process takes up to 31 days, so expect a lag before call volume drops.3Federal Trade Commission. National Do Not Call Registry – Report Unwanted Calls Registration is permanent. Your number stays on the list until it gets disconnected and reassigned to someone else, and you can check its status anytime at donotcall.gov.
Calls the Registry Cannot Stop
Knowing the gaps saves you from assuming the system is broken when certain callers keep reaching you. The following categories are legally permitted even after you register:4Federal Trade Commission. Q&A for Telemarketers and Sellers About DNC Provisions in TSR
- Political campaigns and organizations.
- Charities, including for-profit fundraisers calling on their behalf.
- Genuine surveys and polls with no sales pitch attached.
- Companies you’ve bought from, for 18 months after your last purchase or payment. If you submitted an inquiry or application, the company gets three months.
- Any company you signed a written permission for, until you revoke it.
- Purely informational calls, such as a flight cancellation notice.
The bigger gap is illegal traffic. The FCC describes the registry as a list that “legitimate telemarketers agree not to call.”5Federal Communications Commission. Stop Unwanted Robocalls and Texts Overseas robocall mills and caller ID spoofers already break the law, so a federal list is not what stops them.
You still have one tool against any caller in the exempt categories: ask to be placed on that specific company’s internal do-not-call list. Once you make that request, the company must honor it regardless of any exemption or existing business relationship.4Federal Trade Commission. Remove Your Number From Data Broker Databases
Your phone number circulates through data broker networks that pull from public records, app permissions, loyalty programs, and online forms. Every time you type your number into a website, it can end up in a database that gets sold to marketers. The registry does nothing to remove your number from those databases; it only tells legitimate callers not to dial it.
Opt out of the major people-search sites directly. Spokeo, WhitePages, BeenVerified, and Intelius all have opt-out pages, though the steps vary. Some ask you to verify your identity by email or phone before processing removal. It’s tedious because there are dozens of brokers, and your information often reappears within a few months as new data flows in.
Paid removal services automate this: they monitor broker sites, submit opt-outs on your behalf, and re-check for reappearances. If you’re doing it yourself, plan to revisit your opt-outs every three to six months. Cutting your footprint across broker databases is what actually shrinks the pool of lists your number sits on, which is what reduces call volume over time.
Turn On Your Phone’s Built-in Call Filtering
Your handset already has tools that can keep the phone quiet while the other steps take effect.
iPhone
Open Settings, then Apps, then Phone, and find Screen Unknown Callers. The Silence option sends any call from a number not in your contacts straight to voicemail. Callers can still leave a message, and the attempt shows up in your recent calls. The tradeoff is real: a doctor’s office calling from a new number, a delivery driver, or a callback from a job application will all go to voicemail. Check your missed calls regularly if you turn this on.
Android
Open the Phone app, tap settings, and find the Caller ID and Spam section. Toggle on both “See caller ID” and “Filter spam calls” to use Google’s database of known spam numbers. Some Android phones also offer Call Screen, which asks callers to state their reason for calling before your phone rings and gives you a live transcript to read.
Turn On Carrier Spam Protection
Your carrier filters calls at the network level before they reach your handset. All major U.S. carriers now participate in the STIR/SHAKEN framework, which verifies that the number shown on your caller ID actually belongs to the caller. The FCC mandated the technology in 2020, with most providers required to implement it by June 30, 2021.6Federal Communications Commission. Combating Spoofed Robocalls with Caller ID Authentication When a call’s origin can’t be verified, carriers can flag or block it before your phone rings.
Carriers also offer their own spam-blocking apps, sold under names like Call Filter, Scam Shield, and ActiveArmor. Basic versions are typically free with your plan; premium tiers add features like personal block lists and spam-risk scoring. Check your carrier’s app or account settings to activate what’s available.
When a spam text or call gets through, forward the number to 7726 (which spells “SPAM” on a keypad). The shortcode works across carriers and feeds the number into your provider’s security database so they can identify and shut down sources faster.7Federal Trade Commission. Don’t Engage With Spoofed or Scam Calls
If you get a call from a number that looks almost identical to your own, that’s neighborhood spoofing. Scammers deliberately display a number with your area code and prefix because people are more likely to answer a familiar-looking number.8AT&T. Neighbor and Reflection Spoofing Phone Scams
If you answer and hear a pitch for an extended car warranty or a claim that your Social Security number has been compromised, hang up. Don’t press any number to “opt out” or “speak to a representative.” Those prompts confirm to the dialer that your number is active and answered by a real person, which raises its value on lists sold to other scammers.
Sometimes scammers spoof your own number, and strangers start calling you back about calls you never made. The FCC recommends letting voicemail explain the situation and waiting it out. Scammers cycle through spoofed numbers quickly and typically move on from yours within hours.9Federal Communications Commission. Caller ID Spoofing
Report Violations and Know Your Right to Sue
If sales calls keep coming after your number has been on the registry for 31 days, report them. The FTC accepts complaints at donotcall.gov/report.html for both do-not-call violations and robocalls, whether or not your number is registered.3Federal Trade Commission. National Do Not Call Registry – Report Unwanted Calls The FCC handles complaints through its Consumer Complaint Center at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.10Federal Communications Commission. Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center Note the date, the number that appeared on your screen, and whether you heard a live person or a recording.
Federal agencies use these complaints to trace call patterns, identify telecom providers routing illegal traffic, and build enforcement cases. Consistent reporting from consumers is what gives regulators the data to act.
You can also sue on your own. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act gives you a private right of action for robocall and do-not-call violations. You can recover $500 per violation, tripled to $1,500 if the court finds the violation was willful.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 47 U.S. Code 227 – Restrictions on Use of Telephone Equipment For do-not-call claims specifically, you need to have received more than one call from the same entity within a 12-month period. The company has a defense if it can show reasonable procedures to avoid calling registered numbers, but for callers clearly ignoring the rules, the math adds up: ten illegal calls can mean $5,000 to $15,000 in damages.
These cases typically fit small claims court, where filing fees are modest and you don’t need a lawyer. Keep a log of every unwanted call: date, time, the number displayed, and what was said. Save screenshots of your call history and any voicemails. The stronger your documentation, the less room the caller has to claim a mistake.
