How to Get Your UAE Visa Cancellation Paper Online

To get your UAE visa cancellation paper online, file through one of two government portals: the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for visas issued in any emirate other than Dubai, or the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) for Dubai-issued visas. Processing takes about two days, and the government fee is AED 150 through ICP or AED 170 through GDRFA. If you hold an employment visa, your employer has to cancel your work permit with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) before either portal will process the residency cancellation.

Pick the Right Portal

Where your visa was issued decides where you file. Dubai-issued visas go through the GDRFA website or smart app. Every other emirate routes through ICP’s website or smart app.1Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. Cancellation of Residency Permits The workflows are close to identical, but the fees and refund rules differ slightly, so filing on the wrong platform wastes time.

One sequencing rule matters before you start. If you sponsor family members, their residency visas must be cancelled before yours. Your own cancellation will not go through until the dependants are cleared first.2The Official Platform of the UAE Government. General Provisions for the Residence Visa

Cancel the Work Permit First If You’re on an Employment Visa

This is the step that stalls most applications. For employment visas, MOHRE must cancel your work permit before ICP or GDRFA will accept the residency cancellation. Submitting the residency application without the work permit already cancelled gets it rejected.3Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation. Cancellation of Work Permits and Employment Contracts

The work permit cancellation is your employer’s responsibility, not yours. MOHRE requires the company to submit an official statement confirming that your end-of-service benefits and other dues have been paid in full, along with your signature agreeing to the cancellation and confirming you’ve received what you’re owed.3Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation. Cancellation of Work Permits and Employment Contracts Filing online through MOHRE is free; going through a business center costs up to AED 72.

This prerequisite doesn’t apply to family dependant visas, investor visas, or domestic worker visas. Holders of those categories can move straight to the residency cancellation step.

Documents to Have Ready

Have everything scanned and uploaded-ready before you log in. Sessions time out, and missing a file mid-application usually means starting over.

  • For any visa type: valid passport copy, current visa copy, Emirates ID copy, and your visa file number.
  • For employment visas: the MOHRE work permit cancellation confirmation, a No Objection Certificate from your sponsor, and a copy of your labor card or employment contract.4Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. Visa Cancellation
  • Sponsor details: the sponsor’s name, and for company-sponsored visas, the establishment’s details.

Both portals enforce file size and format limits that vary by document type, so check the upload requirements before scanning.

The Online Steps

The process is roughly the same on both platforms:

  • Log in with UAE Pass or your existing account credentials.
  • Search for “Visa Cancellation” (ICP) or “Cancellation of Residency Permits” (GDRFA).
  • Fill in personal details, passport number, visa file number, and sponsor information. Some fields auto-populate from government records.
  • Upload the scanned passport, visa, Emirates ID, and any employment-related documents.5GDRFA Dubai. Cancellation of All Types of Residence Permits
  • Review carefully, then pay. Government fees are generally non-refundable, and errors trigger rejections.

Your Emirates ID is invalidated automatically when the cancellation is processed. There’s no separate step for that.

After submitting, you’ll receive a reference number. Use it on the same portal to track your application status. Once approved, the cancellation confirmation is issued electronically. Save or print it right away. This is the document you’ll need for future visa applications, bank account closures, and to prove lawful exit from the country.

Fees and Processing Time

ICP charges AED 50 as an application fee plus AED 100 in smart services fees, for a total of AED 150.1Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. Cancellation of Residency Permits GDRFA Dubai charges AED 50 in service fees plus AED 100 for the residence permit cancellation, plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham, totaling AED 170.5GDRFA Dubai. Cancellation of All Types of Residence Permits

Both authorities list two days (48 hours) as the standard processing time.1Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. Cancellation of Residency Permits5GDRFA Dubai. Cancellation of All Types of Residence Permits Clean applications sometimes come back sooner. Incomplete ones or those flagged for review take longer.

Using a typing center or service agency instead of filing yourself adds a convenience fee of roughly AED 100 to AED 500 on top of the government charges. Filing directly on the portal avoids that markup.

Grace Period Before You Have to Leave

Cancellation doesn’t mean you have to leave the country the same day. You get a grace period that varies by visa category, running up to six months in some cases.2The Official Platform of the UAE Government. General Provisions for the Residence Visa The common windows:

  • Standard employment visa: 30 days.
  • Golden Visa and Green Visa holders: up to 180 days.
  • Investor and student visas: up to 180 days.

Watch the start date. For mainland employees, the grace period runs from the labor card cancellation date at MOHRE, not from the residency visa cancellation. For free zone employees, it runs from the residency permit cancellation. Track the right date on your calendar.

Overstaying beyond the grace period triggers a fine of AED 50 per day, and unpaid fines must be settled before you can exit the country.6The Official Platform of the UAE Government. Visa Fees and Fines

If You’ve Already Left the UAE

Your visa can still be cancelled remotely. In Dubai, GDRFA handles outside-country cancellations through Amer centres or the GDRFA smart app. The fee is AED 290 plus Amer center charges for individuals, or AED 325 for company-sponsored cancellations. The sponsor generally initiates the request. Required documents include the sponsored person’s original passport (if the residency is still valid and they’ve been abroad for less than six months), the original Emirates ID, and the sponsor’s passport and Emirates ID.7GDRFA Dubai. What Are the Residence Cancellation Procedures Non-Dubai visas follow a similar pattern through ICP.

Leaving the country without cancelling first isn’t a workaround. An uncancelled visa remains active, and if it expires while you’re abroad, overstay fines pile up and must be paid before you can re-enter the UAE or apply for any future visa.

Loose Ends: Debts and Refundable Deposits

Creditors can request a court-ordered travel ban for debts exceeding AED 10,000. That means the cancellation paper alone isn’t enough to guarantee you can board a flight. Before you leave, contact your bank for an outstanding balance statement, clear any dues, and get a clearance letter (sometimes called a “no liability certificate”). Close your bank account formally after cancelling direct debits and linked credit cards. Settle DEWA, Etisalat or du bills, and any outstanding rent.

If a refundable security deposit or guarantee was collected when your visa was originally issued, you can claim it back through ICP’s “Refund of Fees” service after cancellation. The refund takes up to five days and is transferred to your bank account once approved. You’ll need a bank certificate showing your account number and IBAN. Only issuance fees are refundable; application submission fees and smart services fees are not.8Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. Refund of Fees File the refund request before you close your UAE bank account, or the process becomes much harder from abroad.
