How to Immigrate to Scotland From the US: Visas, Costs, and Settlement

To immigrate to Scotland from the US, you apply through the United Kingdom’s visa system, since Scotland uses the same immigration framework as the rest of the UK. The visa you need depends on why you’re moving: a job, a university place, a family member already settled there, a business you want to launch, or recognized talent in your field. Once approved, you collect a residence permit after arrival, register for healthcare and tax, and start counting years toward settlement.

Pick the Visa That Matches Your Situation

There is no single “move to Scotland” visa. Choosing the wrong route wastes the application fee and delays your move, so start here.

Skilled Worker Visa

This is the most common route for Americans taking a job in Scotland. You need a confirmed offer from an employer the Home Office has licensed as a sponsor, and that employer issues you a Certificate of Sponsorship covering the role.1GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Overview The job must be on the list of eligible occupations, and you generally need to earn at least £41,700 per year or the “going rate” for the specific occupation, whichever is higher.2GOV.UK. Student Visa (and the Graduate Visa After)

If you’ve been accepted onto a course at a licensed Scottish institution, the Student visa is your route. The university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, and you apply within six months of receiving it.5GOV.UK. Student Visa – Your Course You also need to show you can cover living costs — £1,171 per month for up to nine months at any Scottish university, working out to about £10,539.6GOV.UK. After finishing an eligible degree, you can switch to the Graduate visa and work in any job (or be self-employed) for two years, or three years for doctoral graduates, if you apply on or before December 31, 2026. The application is filed from inside the UK while your Student visa is still valid, and your university confirms course completion.7GOV.UK. Graduate Visa – Overview This is a practical way into the Scottish job market: it buys time to find a Skilled Worker sponsor without the deadline pressure of an expiring student visa.

Family Visa

If your spouse, partner, parent, or child is a British citizen or has settled status in the UK, you can apply for a family visa. For spouse and partner applications, the two of you together must show a combined income of at least £29,000 per year, or you can substitute cash savings of roughly £88,500.8GOV.UK. Family Visas – Financial Requirements if Applying as a Partner or Spouse The relationship has to be genuine, and both partners must be at least 18.

Innovator Founder Visa

For starting your own business rather than joining an existing one, the Innovator Founder visa requires an endorsement from an approved body confirming the business is genuinely new, commercially viable, and built to scale.9GOV.UK. Innovator Founder Visa – Overview The personal maintenance requirement is low at £1,270 in savings; the hard part is winning the endorsement itself.

Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent visa targets recognized leaders or emerging leaders in academia, arts and culture, or digital technology. If you haven’t won an eligible prestigious prize, you’ll need an endorsement from the relevant body in your field.10GOV.UK. Apply for the Global Talent Visa – Overview No job offer is required, you can work flexibly across employers, and it offers one of the faster routes to settlement.

What About the Ancestry Visa?

The UK Ancestry visa lets holders live and work in the UK for five years based on having a grandparent born in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man. It’s only open to Commonwealth citizens, and the United States is not a Commonwealth country. It’s available to you only if you also hold citizenship from a Commonwealth nation such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.11GOV.UK. UK Ancestry Visa – Overview

What It Costs

The Skilled Worker application fee from outside the UK is £819 for a visa lasting up to three years, or £1,618 for longer than three years. Dependents pay the same amount each.12GOV.UK. Home Office Immigration and Nationality Fees, 8 April 2026

On top of the visa fee, everyone pays the Immigration Health Surcharge, which unlocks NHS access (in Scotland, that’s NHS Scotland, which operates somewhat independently from NHS England). The rate is £1,035 per year for most applicants and £776 per year for students and those under 18, and you pay the full amount for the whole visa length upfront.13GOV.UK. Pay for UK Healthcare as Part of Your Immigration Application – How Much to Pay A three-year Skilled Worker visa carries a £3,105 IHS bill by itself.

If three weeks feels too long, Priority processing costs an extra £500 per applicant and usually returns a decision within five working days. Super Priority costs another £1,000 and targets the next working day after your biometrics appointment.14GOV.UK. Get a Faster Decision on Your Visa or Settlement Application Family visa priority timelines run longer, up to 30 working days. Each family member pays their own priority surcharge.

How the Application Actually Works

You apply online through GOV.UK, pay the visa fee and IHS, then book a biometrics appointment at a US visa application center (commercial partners such as VFS Global operate these in multiple cities). Fingerprints and a photograph are taken there. Documents are uploaded online beforehand or scanned at the center.

Typical documents include:

  • A current, valid passport plus any older passports showing travel history
  • Sponsorship paperwork — a Certificate of Sponsorship for work visas or a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies for student visas
  • Bank statements covering 28 consecutive days at the required balance, with the closing date within the required window before your application15GOV.UK. Financial Evidence for Student and Child Student Visa Applicants
  • Degrees, diplomas, or professional certifications relevant to the route
  • Marriage certificates or cohabitation proof for family visas
  • A Secure English Language Test certificate if your route requires one

Americans coming directly from the US do not need a tuberculosis test.16GOV.UK. Bringing Family With You

Most long-term visa routes let you bring a spouse or civil partner and children under 18. Unmarried partners can also qualify if you’ve lived together for at least two continuous years. Each dependent files a separate application and pays the same fee as the main applicant.

You also need to show extra maintenance funds: £630 per month for a spouse, £315 for the first child, and £200 for each additional child. Dependents get full work rights (except in professional sports), can study without restrictions, and are covered by the NHS through the IHS.

Household Goods and Pets

To avoid UK customs duties on your belongings, complete a ToR1 form with HM Revenue and Customs before your goods ship. You need to have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, owned the goods for at least six months, and import them within 12 months of arriving. Items brought in under the relief cannot be sold, lent, or given away for 12 months. Alcohol, tobacco, and commercial vehicles are excluded.18GOV.UK. Transfer of Residence to the UK Miss this step or leave the reference number off your import declaration and you can be billed duty on your own furniture.

Moving a dog or cat has three steps in a strict order. First, an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip. Second, a rabies vaccination administered on or after the microchip date, with at least 21 days between the primary vaccination and UK entry. A vaccination given before the microchip is invalid. Third, a USDA-accredited veterinarian issues the official UK health certificate; for non-commercial travel it’s valid for 30 days but must be endorsed by APHIS within 10 days of your UK arrival, and the owner signs the final declaration page before travel.19Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Your First Weeks in Scotland

Pick Up Your Biometric Residence Permit

The visa vignette in your passport is valid for only 90 days. Once in the UK, collect your Biometric Residence Permit — your long-term proof of status. If you chose Post Office collection, pick it up from the branch listed in your decision letter within 10 days of arrival or before the vignette expires, whichever is later, and bring the passport with the vignette.20GOV.UK. Guidance Notes – Biometric Residence Permits – General Information for Overseas Applicants Failing to collect can result in a financial penalty or cancellation of your permission to stay.

Apply for a National Insurance Number

You need a National Insurance number to work legally and be taxed correctly. You can apply once you’re in the UK with the right to work, and you can start work before the number arrives as long as your visa proves your right to work. Applications typically take up to four weeks.21GOV.UK. Apply for a National Insurance Number Check the back of your BRP first — some have a National Insurance number printed on them already.

Register With a GP and for Council Tax

NHS Scotland is free at the point of use for IHS-paying visa holders. Find a nearby GP practice, complete a registration form, and submit it; if you’re staying more than three months, you register permanently. You shouldn’t be turned away for lacking proof of address, though identification and an address help.22NHS inform. Registering With a GP Practice Medical records from outside the UK won’t transfer, so bring copies. You also register for council tax with your local council when you move into a property.23mygov.scot. Registering for Council Tax

Your US Taxes Don’t Stop

The United States taxes citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. Once you’re in Scotland paying UK tax, you still have to file a US federal return every year. The US-UK tax treaty and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion prevent most double taxation but don’t remove the filing obligation.

Two other rules catch people out. If your UK bank and savings accounts together exceed $10,000 at any point in the year, you must file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114). If your foreign financial assets exceed $200,000 at year-end as a single filer living abroad, FATCA reporting on Form 8938 applies. Penalties for missed filings are steep, and the IRS treats ignorance as no excuse. Many Americans abroad use a preparer who specializes in expat returns.

From Visa to Settlement to Citizenship

After five years on a qualifying visa such as the Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, the UK equivalent of a green card. You have to pass the Life in the UK test (24 multiple-choice questions on British history, culture, and government), continue meeting salary requirements, and have your employer confirm you’re still needed.24GOV.UK. Indefinite Leave to Remain if You Have a Skilled Worker Visa

The UK government announced proposed changes in late 2025 that would extend the standard settlement wait from five years to ten for many visa holders. Skilled Worker holders earning above £50,270 or in graduate-level public-sector roles such as nursing would likely stay on the five-year track, and very high earners with taxable income above £125,140 could become eligible in as few as three years. Not all of these changes have taken effect as of early 2026, and the final rules may differ from the proposals. Watch official Home Office announcements as you plan.

Once you’ve held ILR for at least 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalization. Both the US and UK allow dual citizenship.
