To immigrate to Sweden from the USA, you apply for a residence permit before you leave, and the type of permit depends on why you are moving. The Swedish Migration Agency handles all applications, with separate routes for workers, EU Blue Card professionals, students, family members joining a relative in Sweden, self-employed founders, and master’s-degree holders looking for work. Nearly all applications are filed online. Once you arrive, registering with the Swedish Tax Agency unlocks the personnummer that runs the rest of your daily life.
Pick the route that matches your reason for the move. The requirements, fees, and timelines below apply to each in turn.
Work Permit
A work permit is the most common route. You need a concrete job offer from a Swedish employer before you can apply, and the employer has to advertise the position within Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least ten days first. Your salary and other employment terms must meet or exceed what Swedish collective agreements require for the occupation, or what is customary in the industry if no collective agreement covers it.1Swedish Migration Agency. Employing Someone From Outside the EU/EEA – Employment
Your monthly salary must also be at least 80 percent of the median Swedish salary. As of mid-2025, that floor is SEK 29,680 per month, based on a median of SEK 37,100 published by Statistics Sweden.2Swedish Migration Agency. A Good Living – Maintenance Requirement for Work Permits In January 2026, the Swedish government announced plans to raise this to 90 percent of the median, roughly SEK 33,390 per month.3Government Offices of Sweden. The employee application fee is SEK 2,200, with SEK 1,500 for each adult family member and SEK 750 per child.4Swedish Migration Agency. Employee or Self-Employed – Employees Standard processing often runs several months. If your employer is certified or the role is a highly qualified position with complete documentation, the Migration Agency must decide within 30 days.5Swedish Migration Agency. If You Are Employing Highly Qualified Workers Incomplete applications, even through the fast track, can push waits to four months or more.
EU Blue Card
The EU Blue Card is a separate work permit for highly qualified professionals, and it offers easier mobility within the EU after an initial period. You need higher education equivalent to at least 180 higher education credits (roughly a three-year bachelor’s) or at least five years of relevant professional experience.6Swedish Migration Agency. The salary bar is higher: at least 1.25 times the average Swedish salary, which as of July 2025 works out to SEK 52,000 per month. You also need an employment contract of at least six months and comprehensive health insurance covering urgent care, hospitalization, emergency dental, and medical repatriation.
Student Residence Permit
If you have been accepted into a full-time program at a recognized Swedish university or college, you can apply for a residence permit for higher education. The part that surprises many applicants is the financial requirement. For 2026 applications, you must show bank assets of at least SEK 10,656 per month for each month your permit will cover.7Swedish Migration Agency. You Want to Apply – Higher Education That figure is tied to 18 percent of Sweden’s annual price base amount, set at SEK 59,200 for 2026. A ten-month academic year works out to roughly SEK 106,560 in required funds.
You also need comprehensive health insurance for the full stay, and you may have to pay your first tuition installment before submitting the permit application. The application fee is SEK 1,500 for adults, SEK 750 for children under 18.
Family Reunification
Family reunification permits let you join a spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner, or parent who already holds a valid residence permit in Sweden. The sponsor in Sweden must show they can financially support you and provide adequate housing. Housing standards are specific: a couple without children needs at minimum a home with one room plus a kitchen or kitchenette, and each pair of children can share a bedroom.8Swedish Migration Agency. Self-Employment Permit
Running your own business in Sweden requires a self-employment residence permit. You must own at least 51 percent of the company and be the person actually running it day to day.9Swedish Migration Agency. Self-Employed People The Migration Agency expects relevant industry experience and a viable business plan.
The financial requirements are substantial. You need at least SEK 200,000 in a bank account in your name to cover two years of living expenses, plus SEK 100,000 if a spouse comes with you and SEK 50,000 for each child. The account does not need to be in Sweden, but the funds must be transferable. Bank statements from the last three months serve as proof.
Jobseeker Permit for Master’s Degree Holders
If you hold a master’s degree or equivalent second-cycle qualification but do not yet have a Swedish job offer, you can apply for a residence permit to look for work or explore starting a business. The permit lasts up to nine months. You need bank assets of at least SEK 13,000 for each month you apply for, plus enough to cover a return trip, and comprehensive health insurance for the full duration.10Swedish Migration Agency. Look for Work or Start a Business You must apply from outside Sweden.
How to Apply
Nearly all applications go through the Swedish Migration Agency’s online portal. You upload the forms, passport copies showing your photo, personal data, and signature, and every supporting document the route requires. Any document not in Swedish or English must be translated by an authorized translator before submission. You pay the application fee during the online process.
After you submit, you will likely need to visit a Swedish embassy or consulate in the United States for biometrics, meaning fingerprints and a photograph, or for a short interview. The Migration Agency contacts you if it needs more documentation.
Processing times vary widely by permit type and by how complete the file is. Family reunification and self-employment permits sometimes take the longest. The single most useful thing you can do to shorten your wait is submit a complete application from the start. Missing documents are the most common cause of delay. You must apply before entering Sweden if your stay will exceed 90 days.11Swedish Migration Agency. Apply for a Visitors Residence Permit – More Than 90 Days
After You Arrive
Personnummer
If you plan to live in Sweden for at least one year, register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to be listed in the Population Register.12Skatteverket. Moving to Sweden – Population Registration Registration triggers your personnummer, a ten-digit personal identity number that becomes your identifier for almost everything.13Skatteverket. Personal Identity Numbers Without it, opening a bank account, signing a phone contract, or booking a doctor’s appointment becomes difficult.
BankID and a Bank Account
Sweden runs on digital identification. BankID is the country’s dominant electronic ID, and you will need it to log in to your bank, file taxes, access public services, and use mobile payment apps like Swish. To get BankID, you first need your personnummer and a Swedish bank account. Banks set their own policies on issuing BankID, so bring your passport, residence permit card, and proof of address. Some banks require an in-person visit. Expect a few weeks from arrival before everything is active.
Healthcare and Social Insurance
Once you have your personnummer and are in the Population Register, you gain access to Sweden’s public healthcare system. Coverage is subsidized and cost-capped, though you pay small patient fees for doctor visits and prescriptions.
Social insurance benefits, including parental leave, sick pay beyond what your employer covers, and compensation for work-related injuries, are run by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). Enrollment is not automatic. When you need a benefit, you apply through the agency’s online portal using BankID. Non-EU citizens generally need a work permit to qualify. Child allowance is the exception; it starts automatically once your child is registered with Skatteverket.
Permanent Residency and Citizenship
After five continuous years in Sweden on a valid residence permit, you can apply for long-term resident status, which comes with a permanent residence permit. You must show you can financially support yourself and any family members for the long term, through employment, a business, or sufficient personal funds.14Swedish Migration Agency. Apply for Long-Term Resident Status in Sweden There is no formal language test for permanent residency.
Swedish citizenship generally requires the same five years of continuous residence, plus a permanent residence permit and what the Migration Agency calls an “orderly life,” meaning no serious criminal record.15Swedish Migration Agency. Citizenship for Adults If you are married to or cohabiting with a Swedish citizen, the residency requirement drops to three years, provided you have lived together for the last two. Sweden has allowed dual citizenship since 2001, so you do not have to give up your American passport.16Government Offices of Sweden. Dual Citizenship
U.S. Tax Obligations You Still Have
Moving to Sweden does not end your relationship with the IRS. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income no matter where they live, so you keep filing a federal return every year. Two extra reporting requirements catch Americans abroad more than anything else.
If the combined value of your foreign financial accounts tops $10,000 at any point during the year, you must file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) using FinCEN Form 114 by April 15.17Internal Revenue Service. Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) That covers every checking, savings, or other financial account you hold at a Swedish bank. Separately, FATCA requires reporting specified foreign financial assets on Form 8938 with your tax return if those assets exceed $200,000 on the last day of the year or $300,000 at any point during the year for single filers living abroad, with the thresholds doubled for joint filers. Penalties for missing these filings are steep: $10,000 for failing to file Form 8938, additional penalties up to $50,000 for ignoring IRS notices, and a 40 percent penalty on any underpayment tied to undisclosed assets.18Internal Revenue Service. Summary of FATCA Reporting for US Taxpayers
To avoid double taxation, you can claim the foreign earned income exclusion on Form 2555, which shelters a substantial portion of earned income from U.S. tax, or take a foreign tax credit for Swedish taxes paid. The United States and Sweden also have a bilateral tax treaty that provides additional relief. Given Sweden’s high income tax rates, most Americans living there find the foreign tax credit eliminates their U.S. tax liability entirely, but the filing obligations remain. A tax professional experienced in expat returns is worth the cost, because the interaction between Swedish and U.S. rules is genuinely complicated.
