If you own or lease a Jeep Wrangler 4xe or Grand Cherokee 4xe, you generally don’t need to sign anything to join a class action lawsuit against Stellantis over the vehicles’ defects — federal class actions use an opt-out structure, so once a court certifies a class, every qualifying owner is automatically in. None of the pending U.S. cases have been certified yet, which means the practical step right now is to identify the lawsuit that matches your vehicle, register your interest with the law firm handling it, and hold on to your paperwork.
What “Joining” a Class Action Actually Means
Most product-defect class actions, including the Jeep 4xe suits, are brought under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23(b)(3). Under that rule, class members are automatically included once a court certifies the class. If you own or lease a covered vehicle, you do not have to file anything to be part of the case.1Cornell Law Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Rule 23
When certification happens, the court is required to send notice to every class member it can identify. That notice explains the case and gives a deadline to opt out if you want to pursue an individual claim instead. If you do nothing, you stay in the class and are bound by whatever settlement or verdict follows.1Cornell Law Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Rule 23
As of mid-2026, none of the U.S. Jeep 4xe class actions have reached that stage. No formal class notices have been sent, and no settlement has been reached in any of them.

The lawsuits split along two different defects. Which one applies to you determines which firm to contact.
Battery Fire Cases (2020–2026 Models)
Several suits allege the high-voltage lithium-ion battery packs can overheat and catch fire even when the vehicle is parked and off. Plaintiffs say the Samsung-manufactured batteries suffer internal “separator damage” that can trigger thermal runaway, and that Stellantis’s 2023 and 2024 recall fixes did not solve the problem.2Lieff Cabraser. The main battery-fire actions are:
- A case in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (Case No. 2:24-cv-10546) represented by Lieff Cabraser, covering 2020–2024 Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe. FORM Defect Case (2021–2023 Models)
A separate case targets the “Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode” system, which forces the gasoline engine to run when the vehicle detects stale fuel or aged oil, disabling the electric-only mode. Plaintiffs say FORM activates too often and lasts too long, sometimes for months in cold weather, making the advertised 21 to 25 miles of electric-only range unattainable.9CarComplaints. Crowell v. FCA US LLC was filed in January 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware with 32 named plaintiffs. In September 2024, Judge Maryellen Noreika denied most of Stellantis’s motion to dismiss. Affected vehicles are the 2021–2023 Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe. Canadian Owners
Quebec residents have an authorized class action, Azoulay et al. v. FCA Canada Inc. et al. (Case No. 500-06-001342-241), in the Superior Court of Quebec, covering 2021–2025 Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2025 Grand Cherokee 4xe. What to Do Now
Because the U.S. cases are pre-certification, there is no official class list to be added to. What you can do:
- Contact the law firm handling the case that fits your vehicle. For the FORM case, Keller Rohrback takes inquiries at cars@kellerrohrback.com or (800) 776-6044. For the battery-fire suits, check the firms’ case pages for intake information; note that Lieff Cabraser is not currently accepting new plaintiffs in the Michigan case.10Keller Rohrback. - Preserve your records. Keep recall notices, repair orders, dealer communications, and receipts for anything you paid out of pocket, such as towing or rental cars. These support both class participation and any individual claim.
- Watch for a class notice. If a court certifies one of these cases, you should receive notice by mail or email if you’re identified as a class member. That notice will contain the actual deadline to opt out.
If You’d Rather Not Wait: Individual Claims
Class actions can take years, and staying in one means giving up the right to sue individually for the same claims. Owners who want to move faster have alternatives.
Heygood, Orr & Pearson runs a site (jeephybridbatterylawsuits.com) that handles individual claims for owners and lessees of 2020–2025 Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles. State lemon laws are a second path. If a warranty-covered defect substantially impairs a vehicle’s use, value, or safety and the manufacturer cannot fix it in a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement. Rules vary by state, but common thresholds include four failed repair attempts for the same problem or 30 or more cumulative days out of service.14Auto Lemon Lawyer. The Recall Is Not the Lawsuit
The pending recall and the class actions are separate. In November 2025, NHTSA issued recall 25V-741 covering approximately 320,065 plug-in hybrid Jeep vehicles (2020–2025 Wrangler and 2022–2026 Grand Cherokee) after Stellantis reported 19 battery pack fires, including nine in vehicles that had already received a prior software fix. Stellantis told owners not to charge the vehicles and to park them outside, away from buildings and other vehicles.16NHTSA. Being covered by the recall does not put you in a lawsuit, and receiving a recall repair does not waive any right to be part of one. You can check your VIN on NHTSA.gov and reach Stellantis customer service at 800-853-1403.16NHTSA. Park Outside Recall Jeep Wrangler PHEV
