Moving to Wales from the US runs through the United Kingdom’s immigration system, because Wales shares its visa rules with the rest of the UK. The practical sequence is the same for almost everyone: choose the visa that fits your reason for moving, pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, give biometrics, then plan the logistics of shipping, pets, US taxes, and setting up daily life once you land. What follows walks through each of those in the order you’ll hit them.
Choose the Visa That Fits Your Reason for Moving
The UK runs a points-based system that ties your right to enter to a specific purpose. Picking the wrong route wastes the fee and the time, so start here.
Skilled Worker Visa
This is the most common route for Americans moving for a job. You need an offer from a UK employer that holds a valid sponsorship license, and that employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship with your job details and occupation code.1GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa: Your Job
Salary has to meet the higher of two figures: £41,700 per year or the going rate for your specific occupation. A reduced threshold of £33,400 can apply if you’re outside healthcare and education and your role sits on the immigration salary list or temporary shortage list.1GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa: Your Job
Application fees are £819 for a sponsorship of up to three years and £1,618 for longer, per applicant. The Immigration Health Surcharge sits on top at £1,035 per year and buys NHS access.2GOV.UK. Home Office Immigration and Nationality Fees, 8 April 2026
Health and Care Worker Visa
If your role is on the eligible health or social care list, this route cuts costs meaningfully. Applicants and dependants pay reduced visa fees and are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge, which alone saves over £1,000 per person per year. Salary rules still track the Skilled Worker requirements and your employer still needs a sponsorship license.3UK Government Publishing Service. Health and Care Visa Guidance
Family Visa
If your spouse, partner, parent, or child is a British citizen or has settled status, you can apply through the family route. Partner and spouse applicants must both be 18 or older, and the relationship has to be legally recognized in the UK or you must have lived together for at least two years.4GOV.UK. Family Visas: Apply as a Partner or Spouse
The financial requirement is a combined household income of at least £29,000 per year. A lower £18,600 threshold still applies under transitional protection if your first partner visa application was submitted before 11 April 2024, for later extensions and settlement.5GOV.UK. Financial Requirements if You’re Applying as a Partner or Spouse
Student Visa
If a Welsh university or college has accepted you, apply on the Student route. You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed institution, proof of English, and enough money for tuition and living costs. Maintenance is £1,023 per month for courses outside London (£1,334 inside), held for a continuous 28-day period.6GOV.UK. Student Visa – Overview
The application fee is £524, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is discounted to £776 per year.6GOV.UK. Student Visa – Overview
Graduate Visa
After finishing an eligible UK degree, you can switch to a Graduate visa and work in most jobs without a sponsor. Applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026 get two years (three for doctoral graduates). Applications from 1 January 2027 onward receive 18 months. It’s a useful bridge to a Skilled Worker sponsorship.7GOV.UK. Graduate Visa: Overview
Innovator Founder Visa
If you’re an experienced entrepreneur starting a business in Wales, this route needs an endorsement from an approved body confirming the business is new, innovative, viable, and scalable. The savings requirement is modest: £1,270 held for at least 28 consecutive days.8GOV.UK. Innovator Founder Visa: Overview
A separate Youth Mobility Scheme exists for 18-to-30-year-olds (35 for some nationalities), but eligibility is nationality-gated and the list changes; check GOV.UK if that’s your angle.9GOV.UK. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa: Overview
What You’ll Pay and How You Apply
Applications go in online through GOV.UK. You pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge upfront for the full length of the visa, then attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre for fingerprints and a photograph. You may hand in supporting documents at the same appointment.
The IHS runs £1,035 per year at the standard rate and £776 per year for students and Youth Mobility applicants. Coverage starts the day your visa begins. Each dependant pays their own visa fee and IHS, which is where family budgets stretch. A three-year Skilled Worker visa for two adults clears £8,000 in government fees before you pack a box.
Standard processing from outside the UK is roughly three weeks. Priority service costs an extra £500 and typically produces a decision within five working days. Super priority costs £1,000 and aims for the next working day. Family visas from outside the UK move slower, with priority timelines running up to 30 working days even after paying the £500 upgrade.10GOV.UK. A valid passport is the baseline document for every route. Sponsored workers need the Certificate of Sponsorship from the employer.1GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa: Your Job Students need the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.6GOV.UK. Student Visa – Overview Family applicants should bring solid evidence of the relationship: marriage or civil partnership certificates, joint bank statements, shared tenancy agreements, photographs. The more you provide upfront, the fewer information requests slow the file down.
Shipping Your Belongings and Bringing Pets
If you’ve lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, Transfer of Residence relief lets you import household goods duty-free. You must have owned the items for at least six months and apply for approval from HMRC using the ToR1 form before you claim the relief. Goods can arrive in several shipments, but everything has to be imported within 12 months of your move, and once they’re in under this relief you can’t sell, lend, or hire them out for 12 months.11GOV.UK. Transfer of Residence to the UK
A 20-foot container from a major US port to the UK generally runs $3,600 to $8,500 before insurance and door-to-door surcharges. Get several quotes and allow months of lead time.
Dogs, cats, and ferrets need serious runway. Microchip first, then a rabies vaccination, and you can’t travel until at least 21 full days after the shot.12GOV.UK. Bringing Your Pet Dog, Cat or Ferret to Great Britain Dogs also need a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before entering Great Britain, with the product name, date and time, and the vet’s stamp and signature recorded in the travel paperwork.13GOV.UK. Tapeworm Treatment for Dogs Four to five months out is a sensible start.
Your US Tax Bill Follows You
This is what catches Americans out. The US taxes citizens on worldwide income no matter where they live, and moving abroad does not end the annual federal filing obligation.14Internal Revenue Service. US Citizens and Residents Abroad – Filing Requirements
You’ll also owe UK income tax on your earnings, so the two tools that stop you being taxed twice are the Foreign Tax Credit on IRS Form 1116 and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion on Form 2555. For tax year 2026, the exclusion shields up to $132,900 of earned income from US tax.15Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026
UK rates generally sit higher than US rates, so the Foreign Tax Credit is often the better call for Americans in Wales because it offsets US tax dollar-for-dollar against UK tax already paid. The exclusion only covers earned income like salary and self-employment, so it doesn’t help with investment income or pensions. A tax professional who works on US-UK returns tends to pay for themselves.
Opening UK bank accounts triggers extra reporting. If the combined value of your foreign financial accounts tops $10,000 at any point in the year, you have to file an FBAR (FinCEN Report 114) with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.16FinCEN.gov. Reporting Maximum Account Value Separately, IRS Form 8938 kicks in at higher thresholds. Single filers living abroad file if foreign financial assets exceed $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or $300,000 at any point during the year; married joint filers get double those numbers.17Internal Revenue Service. Summary of FATCA Reporting for US Taxpayers Penalties for missed filings are steep, and not knowing isn’t a defense.
Setting Up Life Once You Land
National Insurance Number
You need a National Insurance number to work legally and get paid. Apply online through GOV.UK once you arrive, with your passport and proof of identity. You may need to upload a photo of yourself holding your passport or attend an appointment. The number usually arrives within four weeks of proving identity.18GOV.UK. Registering With a GP and NHS Dental Care
The Immigration Health Surcharge you already paid gives you NHS access from the date your visa starts. Register with a local GP surgery as soon as you can, bringing your passport and proof of address; the GP handles most care and issues referrals to specialists.
NHS dental care in Wales sits on a separate charge structure. A routine exam with X-rays is £20. Treatment covering fillings, extractions, or root canals is £60. Complex work like crowns and dentures is £260. Urgent dental care is a flat £30.19GOV.WALES. NHS Dental Charges and Exemptions Finding an NHS dentist accepting new patients can take effort, so start looking early.
Bank Account
Opening a UK account needs proof of identity and proof of address. The bind is real: you often need a UK address to open the account, and you need the account to rent. Some banks offer newcomer accounts with lighter address verification, and an employer letter confirming your job and address can help.
Council Tax
Every household in Wales pays council tax, a local property charge funding services like rubbish collection, police, and schools. The amount depends on your property’s valuation band and the local authority. Register with your council shortly after moving in. Not registering doesn’t cancel the bill.
Driving
You can drive on your US license for up to 12 months of residency. After that, you’ll need to pass both the UK theory test and a practical test. The US is not on the UK’s list of countries whose licenses can be directly exchanged, so there’s no shortcut. The theory test covers signs and rules that differ from American norms, and driving on the left takes real adjustment.
Welsh Language, Schools, and Culture
Welsh is a living language. Nearly 900,000 people speak it, and in parts of north and west Wales roughly three-quarters of residents use it as their primary language. Road signs are bilingual across Wales and all schools teach Welsh as a subject; many, particularly in Welsh-speaking areas, use it as the primary language of instruction. Getting by without Welsh is fine because English is universal, but basic greetings and place-name vocabulary help.
Education is compulsory for children aged 5 to 16, with an option to continue to 18. State schools are free and run by the local authority; independent schools charge tuition. Welsh-medium schools sit alongside English-medium options. Popular schools fill up, so research admissions timelines well before the move.
Staying for Good: Settlement and Citizenship
A visa lets you live in Wales; it doesn’t let you stay forever. The clock on residency starts when you arrive, so the timelines matter from day one.
Indefinite Leave to Remain is the UK’s permanent residency. Partner visa holders on the standard five-year route qualify after five continuous years on that visa; some qualify on a shorter two-year route. The long-residence route needs ten continuous years.20GOV.UK. Indefinite Leave to Remain if You Have Family in the UK: Apply as a Partner Skilled Worker holders generally qualify after five continuous years.
Every ILR applicant has to pass the Life in the UK test: 24 questions from an official handbook, 45 minutes, passing score 75%. You get a reference number that the Home Office checks with your settlement application.21GOV.UK. Life in the UK Test: What Happens at the Test
British citizenship comes after ILR through naturalization. The standard residency requirement is five years in the UK before applying, with no more than 450 days spent outside the country in that window and no more than 90 days absent in the final 12 months. Marriage to a British citizen shortens the qualifying period to three years, with a 270-day absence cap.22UK Government Publishing Service. Guide AN: Naturalisation Booklet – The Requirements and the Process
All applicants must show good character, which covers criminal history and tax compliance; the Home Office may verify with HMRC. The US permits dual citizenship, so naturalizing as British doesn’t require surrendering your US passport. It does mean you keep filing US tax returns for life.22UK Government Publishing Service.
