How to Order a New Driver’s License Online or In Person

To order a new driver’s license, apply through your state’s motor vehicle agency online, by mail, or in person, depending on why you need the card. A simple replacement for a lost or damaged license can usually be done online in a few minutes. A renewal, name change, out-of-state transfer, or REAL ID upgrade almost always means showing up at an office with original documents. Since federal REAL ID enforcement took effect at airport security on May 7, 2025, it’s also worth checking whether your current card carries the gold star in the upper corner before you reorder.1Transportation Security Administration. Start by Identifying Your Transaction

What you’re actually doing determines which channel you can use and which documents you need. The common reasons:

  • Lost, stolen, or damaged card. You need a duplicate. Most states let you order one online or by mail as long as nothing on the card has changed.
  • Expired license. Every state sets its own renewal window. Some open renewal up to six months before expiration, and many offer a short grace period after. Driving on an expired license is a traffic violation with fines attached.
  • Name change. Marriage, divorce, or a court-ordered name change requires an updated card, usually within a few weeks of the legal change.
  • Address change. Moving inside your state means updating your address on file, typically within 10 to 30 days.
  • New state of residence. You surrender the old license and apply fresh in your new state. Deadlines run from as short as 10 days to 30–90 days after you establish residency.

The simpler the transaction, the more likely you can finish it from your couch. Anything that needs a new photo, a verified document, or a status check runs through an office.

Documents to Have Ready

A duplicate for a lost card usually needs little paperwork because your record is already on file. Any first-time issuance, renewal with a change, out-of-state transfer, or REAL ID upgrade pulls in the full federal document set, which most states now use as their default.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards

Proof of Identity

At least one document that proves who you are. The federal REAL ID regulations accept a valid U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate filed with a state vital records office, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Permanent Resident Card, among other options.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards A passport is the easiest single document because it covers both identity and citizenship.

Social Security Verification

Your SSN has to be verified. Your physical Social Security card is the simplest option. If you can’t find it, federal rules also accept a W-2, an SSA-1099, a non-SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing the full nine-digit number.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards

Proof of Residency

For a REAL ID-compliant card you need two documents showing your name and current home address.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards Utility bills, bank statements, lease agreements, and mortgage statements are the usual picks. States set their own rules on how recent these have to be, so check your agency’s website before you leave the house.

If You’re Not a U.S. Citizen

Non-citizens can get a license in every state, but the document list is longer. The REAL ID Act requires states to verify lawful presence before issuing a compliant card.3Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID Act Accepted documents include a valid Permanent Resident Card, an unexpired Employment Authorization Document, or a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and approved I-94 form.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards The office verifies status electronically with the Department of Homeland Security. If that check comes back inconclusive, expect extra processing time. Licenses issued on temporary lawful status are limited to the length of that authorized stay and have to be renewed when status is extended.4eCFR. 6 CFR 37.21 – Temporary or Limited-Term Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards

How to Submit the Application

Online

Most states have online portals for routine replacements and renewals. You log in, confirm your information, pay the fee by credit or debit card, and get a confirmation. Online renewals are typically limited to people whose photo and personal details haven’t changed much, and some states cap how many times in a row you can renew online before pushing you back into an office.

By Mail

Some states accept mailed applications for certain transactions. You send a completed form with a check or money order. Processing takes longer than online, so build in extra time if your card is close to expiring.

In Person

An office visit is required whenever the agency needs a new photo or has to look at original documents. A technician reviews your paperwork, takes your photograph, and captures a digital signature. Some states also require a thumbprint. The visit itself can run from 20 minutes to several hours depending on traffic, so book an appointment where that’s an option. Showing up without the right documents is the main way people lose a day, so stage everything before you go.

Fees

Replacement fees for a lost or damaged license generally run between $5 and $45 depending on your state. Renewal fees cover a wider range because some states price by license term; a six-year renewal costs more than a four-year renewal in the same state. REAL ID upgrade fees are often the same as a standard renewal, though a few states charge extra. Your state’s motor vehicle agency website lists the exact schedule.5USAGov. How to Replace Lost or Stolen ID Cards

Online portals take credit and debit cards. In-person offices usually accept cash, checks, or money orders as well, and some now accept mobile payments. Rejected applications are generally not refunded, so verify your documents before you submit.

While You’re at It: REAL ID

REAL ID-compliant licenses carry a gold star or similar marking in the upper corner.6Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions Without that marking, your license won’t be accepted at TSA airport checkpoints or for entry into certain federal facilities. A valid U.S. passport still gets you through airport security regardless of your license type, so if you have one, the upgrade is less urgent. If you don’t, this is the moment to upgrade.

Upgrading uses the same document set described above: identity, SSN verification, and two proofs of residency. When you apply for a new license or renew an existing one, you can choose whether the card is REAL ID-compliant.7USAGov. How to Get a REAL ID and Use It for Travel Most states require an in-person visit for the initial REAL ID upgrade even if standard renewals are available online.

After You Apply

You’ll leave with a temporary paper permit or receipt that serves as a valid driving credential until the permanent card arrives. These are typically good for 30 to 60 days. Keep the paper on you whenever you drive.

One real limit: TSA does not accept temporary paper licenses as valid ID for a domestic flight.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have upcoming air travel in the gap, bring a passport or another acceptable photo ID to the airport.

Delivery times vary a lot. Some states mail the card in one to two weeks; others routinely take six weeks or more. If the card hasn’t arrived before your temporary permit expires, contact your motor vehicle agency to confirm the mailing address and request a reissued or extended temporary. Address errors are the single most common cause of delay, and catching them early keeps you from driving on expired paperwork.
