To register for the Series 65 exam, create an account in FINRA’s Test Enrollment Services System (TESS), pay the $187 fee, and book a seat at a Prometric testing center within the 120-day window that opens once your enrollment is processed.1FINRA.org. Series 65 – Uniform Investment Adviser Law Exam The exact path depends on whether a securities firm is sponsoring you or you’re enrolling on your own, but either version can be completed online in one sitting if you have your personal and work history at hand.
Check Whether You Need to Take It
Before you pay, confirm the exam is actually required. Most states let holders of certain professional designations skip the Series 65. NASAA updated its approved designation list in May 2024, so verify the current list with your state securities regulator.2North American Securities Administrators Association. Exam FAQs Historically the CFP, CFA, ChFC, and PFS designations have qualified. A CPA credential alone does not; the PFS on top of a CPA does. Each state decides independently which designations to accept, so a waiver honored in one state may not apply in another.
Firm-Sponsored vs. Independent Enrollment
Your enrollment route depends on whether you already work for a securities firm.
If a Firm Is Sponsoring You
When you work for a broker-dealer or investment advisory firm that uses FINRA’s Web CRD system, the compliance department handles most of the filing. They submit Form U4 (the Uniform Application for Securities Industry Registration or Transfer) and request the exam through CRD.3FINRA.org. Form U4 In most cases the firm also pays the fee. You still provide the personal and professional history that goes on the U4, but your compliance team walks you through it, and your enrollment window opens once the filing is processed.
If You’re Enrolling on Your Own
No firm sponsorship is required to sit for the Series 65. Career changers, students, and anyone building credentials before a job search can register directly through TESS.2North American Securities Administrators Association. Exam FAQs Go to FINRA’s enrollment page, create a TESS account, and submit the exam request yourself. The system issues an identification number (a T-ID or U-ID) that you’ll use later to schedule the appointment at Prometric.4FINRA. User Guide for Enrolling Individuals for the Securities Industry Essentials Exam (Non-Form U4)
One boundary worth stating up front: passing the exam as an independent candidate does not register you as an investment adviser representative. It only proves you passed the qualifying test. You still need a firm to file Form U4 and register you with your state before you can advise clients for compensation.
Information You’ll Need Ready
Whether the filing goes through a firm or through TESS, assemble the following before you start. Missing details slow the process and can trigger review.
- Personal identifiers: Social Security number, full legal name, date of birth.
- Five years of residential history with no gap longer than three months. Post office boxes do not count.
- Ten years of employment history, including part-time work, self-employment, military service, homemaking, education, and unemployment. Any gap over three months needs an explanation.
- Criminal disclosure: felony convictions and certain financial-conduct misdemeanors.
- Regulatory and civil disclosure: prior actions by the SEC, state regulators, or self-regulatory organizations, plus investment-related civil suits or customer complaints.
Regulators cross-check what you report against public records, so over-disclose and explain rather than omit. Certain felonies and regulatory findings, including matters involving securities fraud, false SEC filings, or the conduct of an investment advisory business, can permanently bar you from registration.5U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Disqualification of Felons and Other Bad Actors from Rule 506 Offerings and Related Disclosure Requirements Talk to a securities attorney before enrolling if any of that may apply to you.
Paying the $187 Fee
The exam fee is $187.2North American Securities Administrators Association. Exam FAQs TESS accepts credit cards, debit cards, and ACH bank transfers. ACH can take up to 48 hours to clear, so use a card if you’re in a hurry.6FINRA.org. Frequently Asked Questions About the Test Enrollment Services System (TESS)
When payment processes, TESS emails a confirmation with your enrollment details and identification number. Save it; you’ll need the number to schedule. Payment also starts your 120-day enrollment window immediately, so don’t pay until you’re ready to schedule and study.
Scheduling at Prometric
You have 120 days from enrollment to sit for the exam. Miss the window and your registration expires and the $187 is forfeited.4FINRA. User Guide for Enrolling Individuals for the Securities Industry Essentials Exam (Non-Form U4)
Booking runs through Prometric, which operates testing centers nationwide. Schedule at Prometric.com or by phone using your T-ID or U-ID and your legal name. Prometric emails a confirmation with the center address and arrival instructions.

What to Bring on Test Day
Bring one valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID: a driver’s license, passport, or military ID. The name on the ID must match the name on your registration exactly. If they don’t line up because of a marriage or a legal name change, resolve it before the appointment. Arriving without valid ID or after your scheduled start time results in a canceled appointment, and the fee is lost.
Leave phones, smartwatches, and other electronics at home or in your car. The center supplies scratch paper and anything else you need. Personal items go in a locker during the test.
Testing Accommodations
If a disability affects your ability to take a timed in-person exam, FINRA accepts accommodation requests. Submit the Testing Accommodations Request Form with documentation from a licensed health care provider who diagnosed or treated you within the last five years; a self-assessment isn’t enough.7FINRA. Testing Accommodations Request Form Part One Processing runs about 10 business days, so file early. An accommodation approved for a prior FINRA exam carries forward automatically within five business days, so you don’t have to resubmit documentation.
Rescheduling and Cancellation Fees
Changing an appointment at the last minute is expensive. FINRA uses tiered fees based on notice:8FINRA.org. Reschedule or Cancel Your Appointment
- More than 10 business days out: no fee.
- 3 to 10 business days out: $93.50.
- Within 2 business days, or no-show: $187, the full exam fee. You then have to pay again to open a new enrollment window.
All deadlines run to midnight Eastern Time. Put the cutoff dates on your calendar as soon as you book.
If You Fail the Exam
You can retake the Series 65, but NASAA enforces waiting periods:9North American Securities Administrators Association. NASAA Implements Waiting Period for Those Who Fail Exams
- After the first failed attempt: at least 30 days.
- After the second: at least 30 days.
- After the third and each subsequent failure: at least 180 days.
Each retake requires a fresh $187 enrollment. The jump to a six-month wait after the third failure is worth noting if you’re relying on the credential to start earning.
After You Pass
A passing score by itself doesn’t let you advise clients. Every state requires investment adviser representatives to register with the state securities regulator before conducting business.10North American Securities Administrators Association. State Investment Adviser Registration Information Your employing firm files Form U4 electronically through the IARD (Investment Adviser Registration Depository) system, pays state registration fees through IARD, and submits fingerprints directly to any state that requires them; FINRA does not handle fingerprints for investment adviser-only firms.11FINRA.org. Watch the clock on your score. A passing result stays valid for two years; if you don’t obtain an approved registration within that window, the qualification expires and you have to retake the exam.12FINRA.org. Exam Credit and Exam Validity This is the detail that catches independent candidates off guard. If you pass to build a résumé and then take three years to land an advisory role, you’re back at the beginning.
