How to Report a Drug Dealer Anonymously and Safely

To report a drug dealer anonymously, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, submit a tip through the DEA’s online form at dea.gov/tips, or use your local police department’s anonymous tip line.1Crime Stoppers USA. The report is only as useful as the details you give, so gather specifics before you pick up the phone, and take a few steps to keep both your identity and your physical safety out of the picture.

Where to Submit the Tip

Several channels accept anonymous drug tips, and you can use more than one if the situation calls for it.

Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers is the most widely used anonymous tip system in the country. Call the national hotline at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit through your local program’s website, or use the P3 Tips mobile app, which lets you send images and video and have a two-way conversation with investigators without revealing who you are.1Crime Stoppers USA. Profile – Crime Stoppers USA Instead of a name, you receive a unique code number. That code is how you check your tip’s status and claim any reward. Don’t share it with anyone.

The DEA

The Drug Enforcement Administration takes tips online at dea.gov/tips. No personal information is required unless you choose to provide it, and tips are handled confidentially.2United States Drug Enforcement Administration. Tips The DEA is the right choice when the activity looks larger than street-level dealing: bulk quantities moving through a location, manufacturing, or trafficking across state lines. For neighborhood dealing, Crime Stoppers or your local police tip line will usually move faster.

The FBI

The FBI’s electronic tip form at tips.fbi.gov also accepts anonymous submissions; the privacy notice confirms you’re not required to give your name or other personal information.3Federal Bureau of Investigation. Electronic Tip Form For strictly drug-related tips, the FBI generally points people to the DEA, but the FBI form is useful when the drug activity appears connected to money laundering, gang activity, or other federal crimes.

The Department of Justice and ATF

The DOJ’s action center at justice.gov consolidates reporting options across federal agencies, including the DEA, FBI, and ATF. The ATF also accepts anonymous tips through its ReportIt app on Apple and Android.4U.S. Department of Justice. Report a Crime or Submit a Complaint Start here if you’re not sure which agency is the right fit.

Local Police

Most police departments run their own anonymous tip lines by phone, web form, or text. This is typically the fastest route for neighborhood-level drug activity because it goes directly to the officers who patrol your area. Check your department’s website for the number or form. Some departments route their tip line through Crime Stoppers, so it may be the same system on the back end.

Mail

A printed letter leaves no digital footprint. Address it to your local police department’s narcotics unit or to the nearest DEA field office. Don’t include a return address, don’t lick the envelope seal, and don’t handle the paper more than you have to. Print rather than handwrite. There’s no way for investigators to follow up, so put everything you have into the one submission.

What to Include in the Tip

A vague report about “something suspicious” rarely gives investigators enough to act on. The more concrete your observations, the more likely a tip turns into police action. Focus on what you can see from a safe distance:

  • Location: the exact address or intersection, what the building looks like, which entrance people use.
  • People: physical descriptions, approximate age, any names or nicknames you’ve overheard, and roughly how many are involved.
  • Vehicles: make, model, color, and license plate of cars that keep showing up.
  • Patterns: times of day activity picks up, how long visitors stay, whether you’ve seen hand-to-hand exchanges or people waiting in cars before quick visits.
  • Other concerns: whether children live at or visit the location, or whether you’ve seen weapons.

You don’t need every piece. A partial plate and a car description is still useful. A pattern of short visits at 2 a.m. is useful on its own. Report what you have rather than waiting to assemble a complete picture.

Staying Safe While Observing

Your safety matters more than any tip. Drug operations can involve armed and unpredictable people, and the biggest mistake a would-be tipster makes is getting too close. Observe from inside your own home or car. Never approach a suspected dealer, confront anyone, or try to buy drugs to “confirm” what you’re seeing.

Don’t establish a visible pattern of watching. If you sit in a parked car across the street every evening writing down plates, someone will notice. Take notes after you’ve moved somewhere else, or use your phone in a way that doesn’t look like surveillance. If you can watch from a window at home, that’s ideal because your routine doesn’t change.

Don’t talk about your report with neighbors, friends, or on social media. The fewer people who know, the safer you are. If you ever feel you’re in immediate danger, call 911 instead of a tip line.

Keeping Your Identity Out of the Report

Anonymous tip systems are built to shield you, but the weakest link is usually something the tipster does. A few precautions help.

When calling a tip line, dial *67 before the number. That blocks your caller ID for the call, so the receiving end sees “Private” or “Unknown.” Crime Stoppers lines are already configured not to display or record caller information, but *67 adds a second layer, especially useful if you’re calling a local police number rather than a dedicated tip line.

For online tips, avoid using your home Wi-Fi if you can. A VPN encrypts your traffic and masks your location by routing your connection through a remote server. For stronger anonymity, the Tor browser routes your traffic through multiple encrypted layers so no single point knows both who you are and what you’re accessing. Using a VPN before Tor prevents even your internet service provider from seeing that you’re on Tor. Public Wi-Fi at a library or coffee shop is another option, though less private than Tor.

On any online form, leave the optional name, email, and phone fields blank. Every reputable anonymous tip platform makes those fields optional. If a form requires an email, use a throwaway account created just for this.

What Happens After You Report

Your tip goes to the investigative unit or officer responsible for the area. What happens next depends on how much detail you gave and whether it lines up with what investigators already know.

An anonymous tip on its own is usually not enough for a judge to sign a search warrant. Investigators need to corroborate the information through their own surveillance, controlled purchases, or cross-referencing against existing intelligence. A tip that predicts specific future behavior, such as a particular car arriving at a certain address on a certain night, carries more weight than one that only describes what anyone could see, because accurate predictions suggest inside knowledge.

If your tip matches or adds to an ongoing investigation, it may be the piece that finally builds enough for a warrant. Drug cases are often assembled from multiple tips over weeks or months, so even if nothing seems to happen right away, your report may be part of a larger picture. Because you reported anonymously, you won’t get updates on progress or outcome. If you submitted through Crime Stoppers and have a code number, you can call back to check whether the tip led to an arrest and whether a reward is available.5Crime Stoppers USA. Can You Be Forced to Testify?

This is the question that stops most people from picking up the phone. The short answer is almost certainly not. If you report through Crime Stoppers or another truly anonymous channel, law enforcement doesn’t know who you are. They can’t call you as a witness because they have no way to find you.

The Supreme Court recognized in Roviaro v. United States that the government has a privilege to withhold the identity of people who provide information about crimes, and the purpose of that privilege is to encourage citizens to report without fear.6Library of Congress. Roviaro v. United States, 353 U.S. 53 (1957) That privilege isn’t absolute; a defendant can ask a court to order disclosure when the informant’s identity is essential to a fair trial. But that scenario applies to confidential informants whose identity police actually know, not to truly anonymous tipsters whose identity was never collected. If you keep your identity out of the reporting process entirely, the question of disclosure doesn’t come up.

Cash Rewards

Crime Stoppers programs pay cash when a tip leads to an arrest. The national program offers up to $1,000 for information resulting in a felony arrest, and local chapters sometimes offer more depending on the crime.1Crime Stoppers USA. Profile – Crime Stoppers USA To collect, you call back with your code number. If your tip led to an arrest, you’re directed to pick up the cash at a designated location. You never give your name.

Don’t File a False Report

Anonymous reporting exists to protect people sharing legitimate concerns, not to weaponize law enforcement against someone you have a grudge with. Deliberately filing a false drug report is a crime, and anonymity doesn’t make you invisible to investigators who take false reporting seriously.

At the federal level, knowingly making a false statement to a government agency carries up to five years in prison.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 18 – 1001 Statements or Entries Generally State laws impose their own penalties for false police reports, with fines and jail time varying by jurisdiction.

Being wrong about what you observed isn’t the same as filing a false report. If you genuinely believe you’re seeing drug activity and it turns out to be something else, you haven’t committed a crime. The legal standard requires that the false statement be made knowingly and deliberately. Report what you actually see, don’t embellish, and you have nothing to worry about.
