How to Report Defamation on TikTok: Videos, Accounts, and Comments

To report someone on TikTok, open the video, profile, comment, message, or live stream you want to flag, tap the Share or More options button, choose Report, pick the reason that fits, and submit. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds on mobile, and TikTok also accepts reports through a desktop browser and through an online form at tiktok.com/legal/report/feedback.1TikTok. Report a Problem The exact path depends on what you’re reporting.

Reporting a Video

Start from the video itself. On the mobile app, tap the Share button on the right side of the screen, or press and hold anywhere on the video. Tap Report, then choose the reason that best describes the problem. TikTok may prompt you to pick a more specific subtopic. Tap Submit when you’re done.2TikTok. Report a Post

On a desktop browser, hover over the More options (…) button near the top of the video. Click Report, select your reason and any subtopic, and click Submit.2TikTok. Report a Post

Before you file, save evidence. Videos sometimes disappear before TikTok reviews them, either because the poster deletes the clip or because the platform removes it. Take a screenshot or a screen recording, and tap Share, then Copy Link to save the URL. That URL contains the video’s unique identifier and is useful if you need to reference the content in a follow-up or an appeal.

Reporting an Account

If the problem is the person, not a single video, report the whole account. On the mobile app, go to their profile, tap Share at the top, tap Report, and select Account Report. Choose a reason and tap Submit.3TikTok. Report an Account

On desktop, open the profile, click the More options button at the top, click Report, choose Account Report, select a reason, and click Submit.3TikTok. Report an Account

Reporting Comments, Direct Messages, and Live Streams

Not every problem shows up in a posted video. Each of these has its own path.

  • Comments: press and hold the comment, tap Report, select a reason, and submit.
  • Direct messages: open your Inbox and tap the chat. Press and hold a single message to report just that message, or tap the More options (…) button at the top to report the whole conversation. Tap Report, pick a reason, choose Report and Block or just Report, then tap Done.4TikTok. Report a Direct Message
  • Live streams: while the LIVE is running, tap Share, then Report. Select a reason and any subtopic, and submit.5TikTok. Report a LIVE

Using the Web Form

TikTok’s online form at tiktok.com/legal/report/feedback works when reporting inside the app isn’t practical, for example if you don’t have the app installed, if you’re not a TikTok user, or if you’re filing on someone else’s behalf.1TikTok. Report a Problem Select “Report a potential violation” as your topic and fill in the details about the content or account.

Two situations use their own dedicated paths rather than the standard report tool. Copyright claims for your own original music, video, or other creative work go through TikTok’s copyright infringement form, which follows the DMCA’s notice-and-takedown process and requires you to identify yourself as the rights holder.6TikTok. Intellectual Property Policy Reports about users you believe are under 13 can go through the app under Settings and Privacy, then Report a Problem, or through the web form by selecting “Report an underage user.”7TikTok. Choosing the Right Category

Every report asks you to pick a category. Picking the closest match helps route the report to the right moderation team, but an imperfect choice won’t cause it to be ignored, because moderators can reclassify internally. The main categories track TikTok’s community guidelines:

  • Harassment and bullying: targeted attacks, degrading remarks, or repeated unwanted contact directed at a specific person.
  • Hate speech: content attacking people based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics.
  • Dangerous acts and challenges: content showing or promoting dares, stunts, or activities that could cause serious physical harm.8TikTok Ads Help Center. TikTok Ads Policy – Violence and Dangerous Activities
  • Illegal activities: content promoting or facilitating the sale of drugs, weapons, or other illegal goods.
  • Minor safety: content that exploits, endangers, or sexualizes minors.
  • Misinformation: false or misleading content about elections, public health, or other civic topics.
  • Self-harm and suicide: content that depicts, promotes, or encourages self-injury.
  • Spam and fake engagement: fake accounts, bots, or coordinated inauthentic behavior.

What Happens After You Submit

TikTok’s safety team reviews the flagged content against the community guidelines. You can track your reports by going to your profile, tapping Menu (☰), then Settings and Privacy, then Support, then Safety Center, and selecting Report Records.9TikTok. Reporting on TikTok – Tools and Guides

Outcomes range from removing a single piece of content to restricting or permanently suspending the reported account. If TikTok finds no violation, no action is taken. Repeat offenders are tracked, and accounts with multiple violations face escalating consequences up to permanent bans. TikTok doesn’t publish a guaranteed review timeline. Some reports are processed quickly through automated detection; others go through human review and take longer.

If what you saw poses an immediate danger to someone’s safety, contact local emergency services. TikTok’s moderation queue is not a substitute for calling 911.

Will the Person Know You Reported Them

No. TikTok does not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you report.9TikTok. Reporting on TikTok – Tools and Guides They won’t see your username, and they won’t get a notification naming you. The one exception is a DMCA copyright takedown, which requires the rights holder to identify themselves as part of the legal process.6TikTok. Intellectual Property Policy

If a Report Affects Your Own Account

If someone reports you and TikTok removes your content or restricts your account, you can appeal from the moderation notification itself. Tap Appeal in the upper right corner of the notification page and submit your request. A safety team member reviews the appeal against the community guidelines and notifies you of the outcome. You can also check your account standing under Settings and Privacy, then Support, then Safety Center. Strikes expire after 90 days.10TikTok. Guidelines – Moderation Status and Appeals TikTok doesn’t publish an appeal deadline, but sooner is better. If you don’t appeal, the original decision stands.
