IELTS Test Report Form Validity: 2-Year Rule, 3-Year Exceptions

An IELTS score is valid for two years from the date you sat the test. That window is a recommendation from the IELTS partners (British Council, IDP, and Cambridge) based on how language skills fade without regular use, and most universities, employers, and immigration agencies follow it. A few set shorter windows, and Australian skilled migration formally accepts results for three years.

How the Two-Year Clock Works

The countdown starts on your test date, not the day your results arrive. Paper-based results take up to 13 days to release, and computer-delivered results come out in one to five days, but neither delay shifts the starting point.

Sit the test on March 10, 2024, and your scores remain valid through March 10, 2026, even if you did not see them until March 23 on paper or March 12 on computer. Plan your applications around the test date printed on the Test Report Form, not the date you received the notification.

The IELTS partners frame the two-year limit as guidance rather than a hard expiration. Organizations that accept IELTS decide their own policies and can choose to accept older results, or to require newer ones.

When Organizations Set Different Windows

Two years is the norm, not a rule. The IELTS partners are explicit that receiving organizations set their own validity policies.1IELTS. IELTS Scoring in Detail In practice, the variation goes both ways.

Some institutions want fresher scores. Certain competitive universities request results no older than 12 to 18 months, particularly for graduate programs with high academic English demands. A few U.S. universities prefer scores under 18 months old. If you are applying to selective programs, check the specific requirement before assuming two years is enough.

Others are more flexible. Some employers and organizations will accept older results if you can show ongoing English use, through work experience in an English-speaking environment, previous education conducted in English, or similar evidence. The IELTS partners themselves advise that a TRF older than two years “should only be accepted if it is accompanied by proof that the test taker has actively maintained, or tried to improve, their English.”2IELTS. The safe move is to check directly with each organization you are applying to. The two-year standard is a starting assumption, not a guarantee.

Australian Skilled Migration: Three Years

Australia’s immigration system is the most notable formal exception. Under the Migration Regulations 1994, IELTS results for General Skilled Migration visas, including the Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) and Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated), are accepted for three years from the test date. A 2015 amendment to the regulations specifically changed the validity period from two years to three for these visa categories.3JADE Legal Research. Your scores need to be valid at the time the Department of Home Affairs invites you to apply or when you lodge the application, depending on the visa pathway. If your results fall outside the three-year window at that point, the application can be refused. The primary applicant visa charge for a Subclass 189 is AUD $4,910 as of July 2025, so an expired score on an otherwise complete application is a costly mistake.4Department of Home Affairs. U.S. Nurse Credentialing

Healthcare workers applying for U.S. credentials usually fall under the standard two-year window. The CGFNS VisaScreen certificate, which most state nursing boards require for foreign-educated nurses, accepts only the IELTS Academic test, not General Training. The common minimum is an overall band of 6.5 with a 7.0 in Speaking, though some premium employers and Magnet-designated hospitals look for 7.0 overall. If any individual band falls below the required floor, the overall score does not matter.

CGFNS and state boards typically follow the two-year recommendation. If you are in the middle of a lengthy credentialing process, watch your test date closely so you do not have to retest before your application clears.

One Skill Retake Resets the Clock on the New Form

If you missed your target in a single section, you do not have to redo the whole test. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake one component (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking), and you receive a new TRF that combines the retake score with the three you kept. You can choose whether to use the original TRF or the new one.5IELTS. One Skill Retake

Eligibility is limited:

  • Your original test must have been IELTS on computer at a center that offers One Skill Retake.
  • You must sit the retake within 60 days of the original test.
  • You can only retake one skill once per original sitting.

The new TRF carries its own test date, so its two-year validity runs from the retake date. Retaking close to the 60-day deadline effectively extends how long the combined scores stay usable.5IELTS. One Skill Retake

Verification Stops at Three Years

Even where an organization is willing to accept older scores, there is a practical ceiling. Institutions confirm a TRF through the IELTS Results Verification Service, a free online tool that returns the candidate’s identity details, each component score, and the overall band when an administrator enters the TRF reference number.2IELTS. Verifying IELTS Results

The IELTS partners will not investigate TRFs that are more than three years old, so verification beyond that point is not possible even if an organization would otherwise accept the result.2IELTS. Verifying IELTS Results If you are relying on scores older than two years, confirm with the receiving organization before you build an application around them, because the window for the institution to check them is finite.
