Is Saturday Considered a Business Day? Banking, Courts, and Taxes

For most purposes, Saturday is not a business day. Banks, federal agencies, courts, and the IRS treat a business day as Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays, so a check deposited, a payment sent, or a filing submitted on Saturday is generally handled as if it arrived the following Monday. The important exceptions sit in federal mortgage law, where Saturday does count toward the three-day right of rescission and the Closing Disclosure waiting period.

The Default Rule

When a federal rule, regulation, or contract refers to “business days” without defining the term, the Monday-through-Friday convention applies. Federal Reserve Regulation CC, which governs how quickly banks must make deposited funds available, spells this out directly: a business day is any calendar day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or federal public holiday, and the regulation lists each holiday by name.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks

That baseline carries across most of federal law and commercial practice. The sections below walk through where it holds, where it bends, and where you should check before assuming.

Banking and Check Deposits

Banking law makes a small but useful distinction. A “banking day” is any day the bank is open to the public for substantially all of its functions, so if your branch has Saturday lobby hours, Saturday is a banking day for that branch.2Cornell Law School. UCC 4-104 – Definitions and Index of Definitions A business day under Regulation CC, however, never includes Saturday, no matter whether the branch is open.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks

That is why a Saturday deposit behaves like a Monday deposit for fund-availability purposes. A standard local check subject to a two-business-day hold and deposited on Saturday would not become available until Wednesday. Even deposits that normally get next-business-day availability, such as cash deposited in person, electronic payments, and U.S. Treasury checks, measure that next day in business days, so a Saturday deposit still pushes availability to Tuesday at the earliest.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks

Wire and ACH transfers follow the same logic. The Federal Reserve’s Fedwire system is closed every Saturday and Sunday, and ACH transfers depend on Federal Reserve settlement, which only happens on business days.3Federal Reserve Financial Services. Wholesale Services Operating Hours An ACH payment initiated Friday evening or on Saturday does not begin settling until Monday. Payroll direct deposits scheduled for a Saturday payday are typically sent the prior Friday so employees are paid on time.

Where Saturday Does Count: Mortgages

Federal lending law carves out the biggest exception to the general rule. Regulation Z, which implements the Truth in Lending Act, uses two different definitions of “business day” depending on the context, and one of them includes Saturday.4eCFR. 12 CFR 1026.2 – Definitions and Rules of Construction

For the right of rescission on certain home-secured loans and for the timing of the Closing Disclosure, a business day is every calendar day except Sundays and federal public holidays. For other purposes under Regulation Z, such as the lender’s deadline to deliver a Loan Estimate after receiving your application, a business day is any day the lender’s office is open for substantially all of its business.4eCFR. 12 CFR 1026.2 – Definitions and Rules of Construction

Three-Day Right of Rescission

When you take out certain home-secured loans, such as a home equity line of credit or a refinance on your primary residence, you have three business days to cancel. Because Saturday counts, the clock keeps running over the weekend. If the last of the required triggering events happens on a Friday, your three-day window runs through Saturday and Monday and ends at midnight Tuesday, assuming no federal holiday falls in between.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Do I Have To Rescind? When Does the Right of Rescission Start? Assuming Saturday does not count can cost you a day you thought you still had.

Closing Disclosure Waiting Period

Your lender must ensure you receive the Closing Disclosure at least three business days before closing on a mortgage.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure FAQs This period uses the broader definition that includes Saturday. If you receive the disclosure on a Wednesday, Thursday is day one, Friday day two, and Saturday day three, so you can close as early as Monday. A material change to the loan terms, such as a significant shift in the annual percentage rate, restarts the three-day wait.

Court Filing Deadlines

Federal courts use a straightforward approach. Under Rule 6 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, when computing any deadline stated in days, you count every calendar day, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. If the last day of the period lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline automatically extends to the next day that is not one of those.7Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 6 – Computing and Extending Time

So a 30-day period ending on a Saturday makes your filing due Monday. If that Monday is a federal holiday, the deadline shifts to Tuesday. The rule also tells you to exclude the day of the triggering event when you start counting.7Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 6 – Computing and Extending Time Most state courts follow similar logic, though the recognized holidays can differ.

IRS and Tax Deadlines

Tax law applies the same Saturday-extension principle. When the last day to file a return, make a payment, or take any other action under the Internal Revenue Code falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, you are considered on time if you complete the action on the next day that is not one of those.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7503 – Time for Performance of Acts Where Last Day Falls on Saturday, Sunday, or Legal Holiday

For 2026, the standard April 15 deadline falls on a Wednesday, so no weekend adjustment applies.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces First Day of 2026 Filing Season The same rule covers quarterly estimated payments due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. Whenever one of those dates lands on a Saturday, the payment is timely if made the following Monday. For tax purposes, “legal holiday” means a holiday in the District of Columbia, plus any statewide holiday in the state where the relevant IRS office is located.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7503 – Time for Performance of Acts Where Last Day Falls on Saturday, Sunday, or Legal Holiday

Does Saturday Work Trigger Overtime?

No, not on its own. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime pay at one and a half times the regular rate only when a covered employee works more than 40 hours in a workweek. Saturday hours that keep your weekly total at or below 40 are paid at your regular rate.10U.S. Department of Labor. Fact Sheet #23 – Overtime Pay Requirements of the FLSA Some employers pay a weekend premium voluntarily or through a union contract, but federal law does not require it.

Shipping and Mail

Shipping breaks the usual pattern. The U.S. Postal Service delivers most mail on Saturdays, including First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, and packages, with no premium charge. For USPS, Saturday is a regular delivery day.

Private carriers handle it differently. FedEx and UPS do not include Saturday in their default transit-time calculations for standard ground and express shipments. Both offer Saturday delivery as an add-on service with a surcharge, and the rates change annually. A package shipped Thursday with a two-day transit time arrives Monday, not Saturday, unless you specifically select and pay for Saturday delivery.

Private Contracts

In commercial agreements and real estate contracts, the parties can define “business day” however they want. Some contracts explicitly include Saturday to speed up timelines; a real estate inspection period that counts Saturday gives the buyer an extra working day. Others stick with Monday through Friday or list specific exclusions.

When a contract does not define the term, the default follows the conventional Monday-through-Friday, excluding-holidays framework. Trouble starts when one party assumes Saturday counts and the other does not. Spelling out what “business day” means inside the contract, including whether Saturday and holidays are in or out, prevents the dispute.
