Saturday is generally not considered a business day. Federal banking rules, court procedural rules, and most shipping carriers define a business day as Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. The important exception is mortgage lending: when you are counting the days to cancel certain home loans or waiting out the required period before closing, Saturday counts. Whether Saturday is a business day for you depends entirely on which rule applies to your deadline.
The Default Rule
Across most contexts, a business day runs Monday through Friday and excludes weekends and federal public holidays. The eleven federal holidays listed in federal law pause these clocks: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 Holidays If one of those holidays falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is treated as the holiday.
A business keeping its doors open on Saturday does not change how deadlines, processing windows, and transit times are calculated. You can shop, deposit a check at a branch, or drop a package at a shipping counter on Saturday. The underlying clocks that govern financial transactions, court filings, and delivery guarantees usually keep working on the Monday-through-Friday schedule anyway.
Banking and Payments
Federal banking law is explicit. A business day is any day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.2Legal Information Institute. 12 USC 4001(3) Definition Business Day Regulation CC, which governs how quickly banks must make deposited funds available, uses the same definition.3eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 Definitions If you deposit a check at a branch or ATM on Saturday, the hold clock does not start ticking until Monday. A bank that normally makes funds available in two business days may not clear a Saturday deposit until Wednesday.
The same holds for the systems that move money between banks. The Fedwire Funds Service does not operate on Saturdays, Sundays, or Federal Reserve holidays.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. Wholesale Services Operating Hours ACH transactions, which handle direct deposits and most bank-to-bank transfers, also do not process on weekends. A bill payment or payroll deposit initiated Friday evening or Saturday will not begin processing until Monday.
One newer channel breaks that pattern. The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service processes instant payments around the clock, every day of the year, including weekends and holidays.5Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. FedNow Service Not every bank participates, and it applies only to specific instant-payment transactions. If your bank supports FedNow, a Saturday transfer through that channel can settle in seconds. Standard ACH and wire transfers still wait for Monday.
Reporting a Lost Card
The rules shift when you need to report a lost debit card or an unauthorized electronic transfer. Regulation E uses a different definition of business day than Regulation CC. Under Regulation E, a business day is any day the bank is open for substantially all of its business functions.6eCFR. 12 CFR Part 205 Electronic Fund Transfers Regulation E Whether Saturday counts depends on your specific bank.
If your branch opens on Saturday only for basic deposits and withdrawals, Saturday is not a business day at that institution. If the bank runs substantially all of its operations on Saturday, even with reduced hours, Saturday may count. The distinction matters because of a strict liability rule. Notify your bank within two business days of learning that your card was lost or stolen, and your maximum liability for unauthorized charges is $50. Wait longer, and your liability can jump to $500.7eCFR. 12 CFR 205.6 Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers When in doubt, report the loss immediately rather than trying to figure out whether Saturday counts.
Mortgage Transactions: The Big Exception
Mortgage lending is where Saturday’s treatment departs most sharply from the general rule. Regulation Z, which implements the Truth in Lending Act, contains two separate definitions of business day that apply to different parts of the mortgage process.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.2 Definitions and Rules of Construction
For routine purposes, such as counting the days a lender has to send your initial Loan Estimate, a business day means any day the lender is open to the public for substantially all business functions. Saturday typically does not qualify under this version.
For your right to cancel certain mortgage loans and for mandatory waiting periods before closing, the definition broadens. A business day means every calendar day except Sundays and the eleven federal holidays. Saturday counts.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.2 Definitions and Rules of Construction
The consequences are real. After you close on a home equity loan or refinance, you have until midnight of the third business day to rescind. Because Saturday counts, a loan that closes on Wednesday gives you through Saturday at midnight to cancel, not the following Monday. The same rule governs the Closing Disclosure, which you must receive at least three business days before closing.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure FAQs Miscounting these days by assuming Saturday is excluded is a mistake that can cost you your right to cancel.
Court Filing and Tax Deadlines
Federal courts treat Saturday differently depending on where it falls in a counting period. Under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 6(a), you start by excluding the day the deadline is triggered and then count every day that follows, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. If the last day of the period lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline automatically rolls to the next day that is none of those.10Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 6 Computing and Extending Time
In plain terms, Saturday counts as a day in the middle of a period but not as the final day. A 14-day clock that starts Thursday runs straight through two weekends and lands on a Thursday. A 10-day clock that would end on a Saturday instead ends on Monday. The rule protects you from losing rights because the clerk’s office is closed.
The IRS applies the same logic. If the April 15 filing deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date moves to the next business day. Your return is timely if it is properly addressed, postmarked, and mailed by that adjusted date.11Internal Revenue Service. When to File The extension is automatic and covers estimated tax payments, partnership returns, and other filings tied to a calendar date.
Shipping and Delivery
Whether Saturday counts toward a shipping guarantee depends on the carrier and the service you buy. There is also a difference between a carrier delivering on Saturday and a carrier counting Saturday toward its transit estimate. A package can arrive on Saturday without that day advancing the business-day clock.
The Postal Service delivers Priority Mail six days a week, including Saturday, at no extra charge.12USPS. What Is Priority Mail Priority Mail transit times are expressed in business days, counted from the day after mailing, and delivery dates are not guaranteed. The transit framework is still Monday through Friday even when actual delivery happens on a Saturday.
FedEx Home Delivery includes Saturday and Sunday delivery to residential addresses at no additional charge.13FedEx. Weekend Delivery Saturday and Sunday For express services like Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, and 2Day, Saturday delivery is available but costs extra, and dropping off an express shipment on Saturday for processing carries its own fee.14FedEx. FedEx Service Guide 2026 Without paying for Saturday service, express packages shipped Friday usually arrive Monday or Tuesday.
International shipments can lose extra time on weekends. U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not process standard commercial entries on Saturday or Sunday, so a package arriving from overseas on Friday evening or Saturday typically sits in a clearance facility until Monday regardless of the service tier.
Quick Reference
- Bank deposits and check clearing: Saturday does not count. Processing starts Monday.
- ACH and wire transfers: Saturday does not count, except for instant payments through FedNow at participating banks.
- Reporting a lost debit card: Saturday may count if your bank conducts substantially all business functions that day. Report immediately to be safe.
- Mortgage rescission and Closing Disclosure waiting periods: Saturday counts.
- Federal court filing deadlines: Saturday counts as an intermediate day. If the deadline lands on Saturday, it extends to Monday.
- IRS tax filing deadlines: If the due date falls on Saturday, it moves to the next business day.
- Shipping transit times: Saturday generally does not count toward business-day guarantees unless you pay for Saturday service.
Because the answer varies by context, check the specific regulation, contract, or carrier terms that govern your deadline before you count. A Saturday that counts toward your mortgage cancellation window does not count toward your bank’s check-clearing timeline, even at the same financial institution.
