Is Stake Regulated or Just a Sweepstakes Casino?

Stake is regulated, but only partly, and the answer depends on which version of the site you are using. The global platform at Stake.com holds a license from the Curaçao Gaming Authority. The US-facing Stake.us is not licensed as a casino at all; it runs on a sweepstakes model designed to sit outside gambling law. And in the United Kingdom, Stake no longer operates — it exited that market in March 2025 and holds no UK gambling license. Each track carries a very different level of consumer protection.

The Curaçao License Behind Stake.com

Stake.com is operated by Medium Rare N.V. under license number OGL/2024/1451/0918, issued by the Curaçao Gaming Authority.1Stake. Stake’s Official Gambling Licenses That license replaced an older authorization under the now-defunct Curaçao eGaming framework. In late 2024, Curaçao passed the National Ordinance on Games of Chance, which scrapped the previous system of private master license holders selling sub-licenses and set up direct licensing through the newly established Curaçao Gaming Authority. Legacy sub-licenses expired in early 2025, and operators that failed to secure a new direct license lost their right to operate.

Under the current framework, licensed operators are required to provide a safe, responsible, transparent, and reliable gaming environment. That includes safeguards against gambling addiction, protection of minors, verifiable gaming outcomes, and financial stability of operations.2Curaçao Gaming Authority. Online Gaming Info Curaçao licensing is common among cryptocurrency-focused gambling sites, but it does not carry the same level of regulatory scrutiny as licenses from the United Kingdom or from US states with legal online gambling. There is no Curaçao equivalent, at the same level of enforcement, of the UK’s mandatory self-exclusion tools, deposit limits, or affordability checks.

Why Stake.us Is Not a Licensed Casino

Stake.us does not operate as a traditional online casino. It uses a sweepstakes structure built to avoid classification as illegal gambling under federal and state law. The legal distinction rests on a longstanding principle: a lottery requires three elements — a prize, chance, and consideration (meaning you pay something to enter). Remove the consideration element, and the activity becomes a sweepstakes rather than a lottery.

On Stake.us, you play with two virtual currencies. Gold Coins have no cash value and are used purely for entertainment. Stake Cash can be redeemed for real prizes. The key point is that you can obtain Stake Cash without spending money, through methods like daily login bonuses or mail-in requests. Federal rules require that sweepstakes offer a free method of entry and that purchasing anything does not improve your chances of winning.3United States Postal Inspection Service. A Consumer’s Guide to Sweepstakes and Lotteries By keeping that no-purchase-necessary pathway, the platform aims to stay on the legal side of the line between a sweepstakes promotion and unauthorized internet gambling.

Because of this model, Stake.us is not licensed by any state gambling commission. It does not go through the application, audit, and oversight process that licensed online casinos and sportsbooks face in states with regulated markets. The sweepstakes structure is a legal workaround, and its long-term viability has drawn scrutiny from state attorneys general and class action lawsuits challenging whether these platforms genuinely operate as lawful sweepstakes.

Stake Is No Longer Licensed in the United Kingdom

Stake previously ran a UK-facing site at Stake.uk.com through a white-label arrangement with TGP Europe Limited, which held authorization from the Gambling Commission of Great Britain. That operation ended in March 2025, when the Gambling Commission announced that Stake.uk.com would no longer be a licensed website and that the site would shut down by March 11, 2025.4Gambling Commission. Consumer Information Notice: Stake Leaving GB Market As of 2026, Stake does not hold a UK gambling license and is not authorized to accept players from Great Britain. Anyone in the UK accessing Stake.com’s global site is doing so outside the protection of the Gambling Commission’s framework.

Where You Cannot Legally Use Stake

Stake.us is unavailable in roughly a third of US states, and the exact list shifts over time. Restrictions fall into two broad categories: states with their own regulated online gambling markets that do not welcome unregulated sweepstakes competitors, and states where sweepstakes gaming is broadly prohibited. Washington, for example, treats sweepstakes promotions that combine elements of raffles and contests of chance as a form of unauthorized gambling.5Washington State Gambling Commission. Sweepstakes FAQ Check the Stake.us site directly before registering; location and identity checks will block you if you live in a restricted state.

Internationally, the global Stake.com platform is blocked in a number of jurisdictions. Australia enforces strict prohibitions on offshore online gambling operators that are not licensed domestically, and French law similarly restricts access to unauthorized sites. Residents of various Middle Eastern countries are blocked where gambling is prohibited under local law. Ontario is a separate case: the province requires operators to be licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and to enter an agreement with iGaming Ontario, and Stake is not currently licensed there, though it has publicly indicated it is working toward a licensed Ontario platform at Stake.ca.

Trying to bypass these blocks with a VPN violates the platform’s terms of service and can result in account suspension or forfeiture of funds.

What Protection You Actually Get

How much Stake is regulated matters because the protection you receive varies sharply by version. On Stake.com, Curaçao’s framework gives you a baseline of oversight but lacks the aggressive consumer protections built into more established gambling jurisdictions. On Stake.us, the sweepstakes model means there is no state gambling license at all, so you do not get the dispute resolution mechanisms, fund segregation requirements, or responsible gambling mandates that apply to licensed online casinos in states like New Jersey or Michigan. If a dispute arises over your account or funds, your options are largely limited to the platform’s own terms of service rather than a state regulator with enforcement power. In the UK, there is no Stake license to appeal to at all.

Across every version, Stake requires identity verification before you can fully use your account or withdraw funds — typically a government-issued ID and, in many cases, proof of address. Age verification is part of the same process. The operator also monitors transaction patterns for signs of money laundering, and unusual activity can trigger a compliance review that suspends your account or freezes funds pending investigation.2Curaçao Gaming Authority.
