The LSAC fee waiver is a need-based program that covers the biggest costs in the law school application pipeline: LSAT registration, the Credential Assembly Service subscription, CAS reports sent to schools, and a LawHub Advantage subscription. It comes in two tiers tied to your income relative to the Federal Poverty Guidelines, and you apply through your LSAC online account. A Tier 1 approval is worth roughly $1,000 in waived fees.
What the Waiver Covers
Tier 1 is the broader package. It includes a one-year LawHub Advantage subscription (normally $120), registration for two LSATs with Argumentative Writing and Score Preview included, a five-year CAS subscription, and six CAS Reports to send to law schools.1Law School Admission Council. Tier 2 keeps the CAS subscription and LawHub Advantage but cuts the test and report benefits in half: one LSAT registration and three CAS Reports.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver If you apply to more than three schools, each additional report runs $45 out of pocket.
Who Qualifies
The program is open to prospective U.S. and Canadian law students who are financially under-resourced.2LawHub. Income Thresholds if You File as Independent
LSAC compares your income to the Federal Poverty Guidelines published annually by the Department of Health and Human Services. For 2026, the baseline guideline for a single-person household in the 48 contiguous states is $15,960 per year.4HHS ASPE. 2026 Poverty Guidelines
- Tier 1: income at or below 235% of the guideline.
- Tier 2: income between 235% and 260% of the guideline.
For a single independent filer in 2026, that works out to roughly $37,500 or less for Tier 1 and up to about $41,500 for Tier 2.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver
Income Thresholds if You File as Dependent
Dependent filers are evaluated on two numbers at once:
- Tier 1: your own income is at or below 150% of the guideline, and your income combined with your parents’ is at or below 200%.
- Tier 2: your own income is at or below 200%, and the combined total falls between 200% and 300%.
The percentages are applied to the guideline for your household size, so a larger family has proportionally higher dollar cutoffs. Dependency itself is determined by your answers in the first step of the application. If LSAC classifies you as dependent, you must supply your parents’ tax documentation alongside your own; if you’re married, you’ll need your spouse’s as well.1Law School Admission Council. What to Gather Before You Start
The financial section asks for exact figures, not estimates. Have the following in hand:
- Your most recent federal Form 1040 with every schedule you filed.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver
- All W-2 and 1099 statements tied to that return.
- Current balances for every checking and savings account.
- The total value of any stocks, bonds, or real estate you own, excluding your primary residence.
Household size, dependent status, and every dollar figure you enter need to match your tax filings exactly. Discrepancies between the online form and your uploaded documents are a common cause of delays and denials.
How the Application Moves Through LSAC
You submit everything through the fee waiver section of your LSAC online account. The system responds immediately with either a conditional approval or a denial based on the numbers you entered.3Law School Admission Council. 2023-2024 Fee Waivers for LSAC Programs and Services
Conditional approval is not the finish line. LSAC still has to verify your self-reported figures against your supporting documents, and while that review is open, your file is on hold. You can still sit for the LSAT, but your score will not be released to you or to any law school until the waiver reaches final approval or, if denied, you pay the applicable fees.3Law School Admission Council. 2023-2024 Fee Waivers for LSAC Programs and Services Document review usually finishes within two to five business days of receipt. Final approval lifts the hold and waives the fees.
Submit at least six weeks before any registration deadline you care about. Most reviews move quickly, but a request for additional documentation can stretch the timeline out past a week.
How Long the Waiver Lasts, and Why Timing Matters
An approved waiver is valid for two years from the date of conditional approval.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver Unused benefits expire at the end of that window. The waiver season runs July through June, and if your waiver lapses or was denied, you can reapply in the next cycle.
There is no retroactive relief. Fees already paid cannot be waived, and no refunds will be issued.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver Apply for the waiver before you register for the LSAT or buy any CAS service. Paying first and seeking reimbursement later is not an option.
Law School Application Fees
Some law schools automatically waive their own application fee for candidates holding a fully approved LSAC fee waiver. When you open a participating school’s application in JD Services, the system flags the fee as waived.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver
Timing matters. The automatic waiver only triggers at final approval. If you’re still at conditional approval, your options are to wait for final approval, pay the fee and ask the school for a refund at its own discretion, or print and mail the application with a letter noting that your waiver is pending.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver Waiting is the safest route when your calendar allows it, because LSAC cannot refund application fees you’ve already submitted electronically.
If You’re Denied
You can appeal once. The denial letter will spell out what to include.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver The appeal is generally a written explanation of financial circumstances that the raw tax numbers don’t capture, backed by supplemental documents such as medical bills or proof of a recent job loss.
LSAC typically completes appeal reviews within two weeks of receiving the materials. The appeal decision is final through LSAC’s standard channels.1Law School Admission Council. Apply for an LSAC Fee Waiver If the appeal fails, you can reapply when the next waiver season opens in July.
