MasterClass Charge: Stopping Renewal, Refunds, and Auto-Renewal Rights

A MasterClass charge on your credit card is almost always a subscription fee from the online video-class platform MasterClass, either your initial signup or an automatic annual renewal of a membership you may have forgotten about. The company bills only once a year in a single lump sum, and every plan renews automatically unless you cancel first, which is why the charge so often lands as a surprise twelve months after signup.

What You’re Being Billed For

MasterClass sells three membership tiers, all billed as a single annual payment: Standard at $120 per year for one streaming device, Plus at $240 per year for two simultaneous devices with offline downloads, and Premium at $240 or more per year for six devices with offline downloads.1InStyle. MasterClass Review There is no monthly option and no way to buy a single course. Every tier renews automatically at the end of the subscription year.

How To Stop the Next Charge

If the renewal hasn’t happened yet, the surest way to prevent it is to turn off auto-renewal through whatever channel you used to sign up. The steps differ by platform:

  • If you subscribed on the MasterClass website: log in through a web browser, open Account Settings, and switch off auto-renewal. You can also email support@masterclass.com from the account’s email address.3MasterClass. Terms of Service
  • If you subscribed through the Apple App Store: open the Settings app on your device, tap your Apple ID, go to Subscriptions, and cancel there.
  • If you subscribed through Google Play: open the Play Store, go to Menu, then Subscriptions, and cancel.3MasterClass. Terms of Service

Two quirks catch people out. You can’t cancel from inside the MasterClass mobile app; on a phone, the company’s own help center tells you to ignore the “Go to the App” prompt and use a web browser instead. MasterClass also refuses cancellation requests sent through third-party subscription managers like Rocket Money or Trim, and will accept the request only from the account holder’s own email address.5MasterClass. Getting a Refund After the Charge Posts

On paper, you’re not entitled to one. MasterClass offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, but it applies only to first-time purchases made directly on the MasterClass website.6MasterClass. What Is Your 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee Automatic renewal charges are explicitly excluded, and purchases made through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or Roku are governed by those platforms’ refund policies rather than MasterClass’s.7MasterClass. Requesting a Refund

In practice, the picture looks different. BBB records show 145 complaints against MasterClass over a three-year period, 36 of them billing issues, and the pattern inside those complaints is consistent: once a consumer formally files, MasterClass almost always issues a full refund, typically within five to ten business days, via a standardized response acknowledging the inconvenience.4Better Business Bureau. Master Class Complaints Many of the same consumers describe their first contact going through an automated chat that denied the refund by citing the Terms of Service.

The practical sequence that works:

  • Contact MasterClass support first and ask for a refund of the renewal charge. Don’t take the first automated denial as final.
  • If support refuses, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The historical response rate on BBB complaints is high and the refunds come quickly.
  • Keep the email you send and any response you receive. You’ll want them if you escalate to a card dispute.

Disputing the Charge With Your Card Issuer

If MasterClass still refuses, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you a dispute path through your credit card. Write to the card issuer at its billing-inquiries address, not the payment address, within 60 days of the statement that shows the charge. The issuer has to acknowledge your dispute in writing within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days, and while the investigation is open it cannot report you as delinquent on the disputed amount or try to collect it. For a quality-of-service dispute specifically, the charge has to be more than $50 and you must have first tried to resolve the problem with the seller.8Federal Trade Commission. Your Rights Under Auto-Renewal Laws

Whether you can lean on a specific statute depends partly on where you live. California, where MasterClass is based, amended its Automatic Renewal Law effective July 1, 2025. The law requires businesses to get express affirmative consent to auto-renewal terms, send renewal notices 15 to 45 days before an annual subscription renews, provide annual reminders identifying the service and the charges, and let consumers who signed up online cancel online without obstruction. If a company shows you a retention offer during cancellation, it must simultaneously show a prominent click-to-cancel button.9Office of the Attorney General, State of California. At the federal level, the FTC’s “click-to-cancel” rule was finalized in late 2024 and had a compliance deadline of May 14, 2025,10Federal Register.
