You don’t fill out the Michelin tire warranty claim form yourself. The form is a dealer document, and the claim is handled through an authorized Michelin retailer — typically the shop that sold you the tires. Your job is to bring the tire, your paperwork, and your vehicle to the dealer. Their job is to inspect the tire, complete the claim form, and submit it to Michelin on your behalf.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
Michelin uses a single multi-brand claim form that also covers BFGoodrich and Uniroyal tires. The dealer transcribes your information, the tire’s DOT codes, inspection measurements, and the cause of failure directly onto that form.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual Most dealers now file electronically through the Michelin Warranty Claim App, photographing the tire and the DOT marking and transmitting the whole package to Michelin.2Apple. Because the form is theirs, your preparation is about documentation. Show up missing a document and you’ll make a second trip.
What to Bring to the Dealer
Assemble these before you drive over:
- The original sales receipt. This establishes the purchase date, the tire model, and the price. If you can’t produce it, Michelin falls back on the manufacture date stamped on the sidewall to start the six-year coverage clock, which can shorten your window.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
- Your vehicle’s make, model, and model year. The dealer uses this to confirm fitment.
- Odometer readings. For a mileage treadwear claim, the dealer needs the reading at installation and the current reading. If you don’t have the installation figure written down, check your original tire invoice — many dealers record it there.
- Rotation and maintenance records. For treadwear claims, Michelin requires proof you rotated the tires on schedule. Michelin’s standard recommendation is every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, and you should also follow the vehicle manufacturer’s interval if it’s more frequent. Keep alignment verification records too, since irregular wear from misalignment is not warrantable.3Michelin USA. Tire Rotation Guide: Vehicle Types and Care1Michelin B2B. - The tire itself. The dealer takes physical possession of defective tires to finalize the claim; they’re tagged with the claim number and held for possible further analysis.
If you’re claiming winter tires under the mileage warranty, bring documentation showing the tires were installed and removed within the approved seasonal window of September 1 through April 30. Running winter tires outside that window voids treadwear coverage.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
One prerequisite catches people out: you had to register the tires to be eligible for Promise Plan benefits in the first place. Registration happens at purchase, online at michelinman.com/auto/registertires or by mail-in card, and asks for the DOT codes, dealer information, and purchase date.4Michelin USA. Register Michelin Auto Tires Online If registration was skipped, that’s the first thing to raise with the dealer, because strict warranty eligibility depends on it.5Michelin USA. Warranty Information
What Happens During the Inspection
The dealer measures tread depth at multiple points across the tire to get an average. For a workmanship claim, they’re looking for internal cord separation, tread chunking, sidewall anomalies, or other signs of a manufacturing defect rather than impact or road damage. For a mileage claim, they compare the mileage delivered against the warranted mileage for your specific tire model. The findings, the DOT identification number, tire size, and your vehicle data all go onto the claim form.
If the dealer can’t determine why the tire failed, they can contact Michelin Consumer Care for technical assistance before deciding the claim.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
The Six-Month Submission Deadline
Once your claim is written up, the dealer has six months from the adjustment date to submit the completed form and the tires to the appropriate Michelin inspection center. Claims received after that window are denied automatically.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual If there’s any lag between the dealer’s write-up and actual shipment, follow up.
What an Approved Claim Pays
Approved claims produce a credit toward replacement tires, not a cash refund. The size of the credit depends on how much life the tire had left.
For a workmanship claim, the dealer measures remaining tread against the tire’s original tread depth. Michelin multiplies the lower of the dealer’s current selling price or the published adjustment base price by the percentage already worn — that’s what you pay. The rest is the credit.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
For a mileage claim, the same math uses miles instead of tread. A tire warranted for 80,000 miles that fails at 50,000 has delivered about 63% of its warranted life, so you’d pay roughly 63% of the price and Michelin covers the rest.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
Tires replaced within 12 months of purchase with no more than 2/32 of an inch of original tread worn are replaced free of charge, and you pay only service charges and applicable taxes. Outside that window, expect to pay the pro-rated share plus mounting, balancing, new valve stems, and taxes.6Michelin USA. Michelin FAQs Most states also charge a tire disposal or environmental fee of a few dollars up to about $10 per tire regardless of whether it’s a warranty replacement.
Why Claims Get Denied
The most common denials involve conditions Michelin considers outside its control:
- Road hazard damage — punctures, cuts through the carcass, and impact damage from potholes or debris. Certain Michelin Zero Pressure (ZP) and PAX tires have their own road hazard guidelines.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
- Running flat or underinflated. Cord breakdown and liner damage from low air destroy the tire and are never covered.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
- Mechanical wear from misalignment, worn bearings, or out-of-balance assemblies. Shoulder wear, cupping, and feathered edges point to a vehicle problem, not a tire problem.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
- Improper repairs. Plug-only fixes done without removing the tire from the wheel void the warranty.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
- Bead damage during mounting. That’s an installer error, not a manufacturing defect.
- Racing or competition use. DOT-approved competition tires like the Pilot Sport Cup are excluded from mileage warranties entirely.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual
- Missing rotation records on a treadwear claim. This is where most mileage claims fall apart; drivers rotate their tires but never keep the receipts.
If the Claim Is Denied
The dealer must give you a clear explanation of what caused the tire to fail and why it doesn’t qualify.1Michelin B2B. Warranty Claim Procedure Manual If you disagree, call Michelin Consumer Care directly at 1-800-847-3435. Consumer Care can review the claim and, in some cases, authorize a goodwill adjustment even when strict warranty terms don’t apply. The warranty claim app also lets the dealer submit goodwill claims for real-time review by a Michelin tire expert while you’re still at the counter.2Apple. Michelin Warranty Claim App
