Name Change After Divorce Checklist: SSA, Passport, and Deeds

A name change after divorce follows a specific checklist, and the order matters more than the length. Get certified copies of your divorce decree, update Social Security first, then your driver’s license, then your passport, and work outward from there through taxes, financial accounts, insurance, licenses, and estate documents. Skipping the sequence creates mismatches that get DMV applications rejected, freeze bank access, or delay tax refunds.

Start With Certified Copies of the Decree

Contact the clerk of the court that finalized your divorce and order several certified copies of the decree. You need the version that includes a provision restoring your former name, with the clerk’s raised seal or certification stamp. A regular photocopy will not be accepted. Order at least three or four so you can submit them to different agencies at the same time rather than waiting for one to come back before sending the next. Fees generally run between $5 and $25 per copy, depending on the county.

If the decree doesn’t include a name-restoration provision, fix that before you do anything else. Depending on the state, you may be able to file a motion asking the court to amend the existing decree to add the language, or you may need to file a separate name-change petition with its own filing fee and hearing. The clerk’s office in the court that handled your divorce can tell you which route applies.

Update Social Security First

Every other agency verifies your identity against Social Security Administration records, which is why this is step one. If your SSA record still shows your married name when you walk into the DMV, your driver’s license application gets rejected on the spot.

You may be able to submit the name change online through SSA’s website.1Social Security Administration. Change Name With Social Security If the online option isn’t available to you, complete a paper Form SS-5 and either mail it or bring it to a local office with your certified divorce decree and a current photo ID.2Social Security Administration. Application for a Social Security Card On the document, select “Corrected” under the type-of-card heading. That keeps your existing Social Security number and simply updates the name.3Social Security Administration. How Do I Change or Correct My Name on My Social Security Number Card

SSA returns your original documents after processing, and your new card arrives by mail within about 5 to 10 business days.4Social Security Administration. Replace Social Security Card There’s no fee. Some states will accept the SSA confirmation letter at the DMV, but having the card in hand makes everything easier.

Update Your Driver’s License

Once your SSA record reflects your restored name, visit your state’s motor vehicle office. This almost always requires an in-person trip because the agency needs a new photo, a new signature, and manual verification of your court order. Bring your certified divorce decree, your current license, and proof that SSA has been updated. Some states also ask for a utility bill or similar proof of residency.

Replacement license fees for a name change typically range from $5 to $37. Many offices allow online appointments, which cuts the wait considerably. Your old license is usually collected or invalidated on the spot, and you leave with a temporary paper license while the permanent card is mailed.

Update Your Passport

The right form depends on how old your current passport is and whether it’s still valid:

  • Passport issued less than one year ago, with the name changed within that year: use Form DS-5504. No application fee. You pay $60 only if you want expedited processing. Mail the form with your current passport, a certified copy of the decree, and one passport photo.5U.S. Department of State. Name Change for U.S. Passport or Correct a Printing or Data Error
  • Valid passport issued more than one year ago: use Form DS-82 (renewal by mail). The application fee is $130 for a passport book.6U.S. Department of State. United States Passport Fees
  • Expired passport: use Form DS-11, which requires applying in person at an acceptance facility.

Routine processing currently runs 4 to 6 weeks. Expedited processing cuts that to 2 to 3 weeks for an additional $60.7U.S. Department of State. Processing Times for U.S. Passports If you have travel booked within 14 days, you can book an urgent appointment at a passport agency.

Taxes and Employer Withholding

The IRS matches the name on your return against SSA records. A mismatch flags the return and delays the refund. If tax season arrives before you’ve updated SSA, file under your former married name (the one still on file) to avoid the problem.8Internal Revenue Service. Your divorce probably also changed your filing status, which affects withholding. Hand your new Social Security card and a copy of the decree to HR or payroll and complete a new Form W-4 with your updated filing status.9Internal Revenue Service. Financial Accounts and Credit

Banks, Credit Cards, and Loans

Banks and card issuers generally want you in a branch with your certified decree, updated ID, and new Social Security card. They’ll update account titles, reissue debit and credit cards, and update loan documents. Call ahead; some institutions handle it by mail or secure portal, but many still want to see originals. Don’t miss accounts you rarely touch: auto loans, student loans, personal lines of credit.

Retirement and Investment Accounts

IRAs, brokerage accounts, and similar accounts each need a name-change request filed with the custodian, usually a form plus the decree. For an employer-sponsored plan like a 401(k) or 403(b), HR runs the change through the plan administrator. Update beneficiary designations at the same time. A divorce often leaves your ex-spouse listed on accounts opened during the marriage, and the designation typically overrides your will.

Credit Reports

You don’t need to contact Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion directly. The bureaus update your name automatically as creditors report it, so once your banks, cards, and loan servicers are updated, your reports catch up within one or two reporting cycles. Your previous married name stays on file as a former alias, which is normal and doesn’t affect your score. If a name shows up wrong, dispute it directly with the bureau.

Travel Programs and Existing Tickets

TSA PreCheck

If the name on your boarding pass doesn’t match your ID, PreCheck won’t work at the checkpoint. Email TSA’s document processing team your updated government-issued photo ID, your decree (first page, name-change page, signature page), your Known Traveler Number, and your new name. Processing takes up to 45 days, and the name update has to be complete before you can renew the membership online.10TSA Enrollment by IDEMIA. TSA Enrollment Help Center

Global Entry

Global Entry won’t work if the Trusted Traveler Program database doesn’t match your passport, so update the passport first. You can then submit the request through the CBP help portal or visit a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Online updates typically take 3 to 8 weeks.

Airline Reservations

Any flight already booked under your married name has to match the ID you present at the airport. Contact the airline to request a name correction on the existing reservation. Most will process a legal name change supported by a court order without a fee, but policies vary. Updating your frequent-flyer profile is a separate step from correcting an issued ticket; do both.

Property Deeds and Home Insurance

If you own real estate, your deed still carries your married name at the county recorder’s office. The standard fix is a quitclaim deed transferring ownership from yourself under your married name to yourself under your restored name. Record the new deed with the county; recording fees generally run $10 to $100. Update your federal and state ID before filing, since the recorder may require current ID that matches the name you’re recording.

After recording, notify your mortgage lender, title insurance company, homeowners insurance provider, and local tax assessor. A mismatch between the policyholder name and the deed can create problems if you ever file a claim.

Professional Licenses

If you hold a license in nursing, law, teaching, real estate, cosmetology, accounting, or any other regulated field, your licensing board needs to know. Deadlines can be as short as 30 days, and missing one can be treated as professional misconduct, delay renewal, or trigger late fees. Contact your state board directly for its form, documentation requirements, and deadline. Most accept a certified copy of the decree.

Estate Planning Documents

A will, power of attorney, or healthcare directive drafted during your marriage probably references your married name and may still name your ex-spouse in key roles. These documents don’t become invalid just because your name changed, but the combination of a new name and a divorce creates real ambiguity that you don’t want a hospital or a probate court trying to untangle during a crisis. Sign new versions that use your restored name and remove your ex-spouse from any role you no longer want them in, including executor, healthcare agent, and financial power of attorney. Without an update, your former spouse could remain in control of important medical or financial decisions by default.

Voter Registration, Utilities, and Everything Else

Update your voter registration through your state or county elections office; most states allow this online. Watch the deadline: many states require updates 15 to 30 days before an election. Miss that window and you may need to vote under your previous name at your current polling location for that cycle, with the update taking effect afterward.

Utility providers for electricity, water, gas, and internet typically accept a name change through their customer portal or a phone call with proof. The U.S. Postal Service does not offer a name-change notification service; USPS only handles changes of address. Your mail will arrive as long as the address is correct, regardless of the name on the envelope.

Work through the long tail last: email display names, subscription services, gym memberships, alumni associations, and other online accounts tied to your identity. None are urgent, but clearing them prevents the low-grade confusion of seeing your married name resurface months after you’ve moved on.
