Name Change Checklist After Marriage: SSA, Passport, and ID

A name change checklist after marriage works in a specific order: get certified copies of your marriage certificate, update your Social Security card first, then your passport and driver’s license, and only then move on to banks, insurance, voter registration, property records, and the long tail of smaller accounts. The order matters because most agencies verify your new name against the Social Security Administration’s database before they’ll process anything, so filing out of sequence causes rejections.1USAGov. Start With Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate

After the ceremony, your officiant files the signed license with the county clerk or vital records office, which issues the official marriage certificate. Order several certified copies right away. You’ll surrender originals to the Social Security Administration and the State Department, and other agencies will want to see one too. Costs vary by jurisdiction, but most counties charge between $10 and $25 per certified copy.1USAGov. How to Change Your Name and What Government Agencies to Notify Order at least four or five so you aren’t waiting on a returned document before you can start the next step.

Update Your Social Security Card First

This step is the one you cannot skip or delay. Nearly every other agency checks its records against the SSA database, so until your new name appears there, motor vehicle offices and employers can’t verify it. The update is free.2Social Security Administration. Application for a Social Security Card

You’ll complete Form SS-5. Depending on your situation, you may be able to submit the request online through your my Social Security account. Otherwise, visit a local Social Security office in person.3Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security Either way, you’ll need:

  • Your certified marriage certificate. The SSA requires an original or agency-certified document showing both your old and new names. Photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted.4Social Security Administration. Learn What Documents You Will Need to Get a Social Security Card
  • Proof of identity, such as a U.S. driver’s license, state-issued ID, or U.S. passport in your current name.

If you mail originals, use a trackable method. The SSA returns originals separately by standard mail, and your replacement card arrives within 5 to 10 business days.3Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security You don’t need the physical card in hand before moving on, but the database update has to be complete, which happens before the card ships.

Update Your Passport

Which form you use depends on when your current passport was issued relative to your name change. A marriage certificate is accepted proof.5eCFR. 22 CFR 51.25 – Name of Applicant to Be Used in Passport

  • If your name changed less than one year after your passport was issued, use Form DS-5504. Mail it with your most recent passport, a certified marriage certificate, and a new passport photo. There is no fee unless you want expedited service ($60) or faster delivery ($22.05).6U.S. Department of State. Name Change for U.S. Passport or Correct a Printing or Data Error
  • If more than a year has passed, use Form DS-82 to renew by mail or Form DS-11 to apply in person. Standard fees apply: $130 for a passport book or $30 for a passport card, plus a $35 facility acceptance fee if you apply in person with DS-11.7U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees
  • If your passport is lost, damaged, or significantly expired, you must apply in person using Form DS-11 with the full fee and acceptance fee.

If you have a honeymoon or international trip booked, make sure the name on your airline ticket matches the name on the passport you’ll be carrying. A mismatch can cause problems at check-in, especially with international flights or connections on different airlines. The safest approach is to book travel in whatever name is currently on your passport and update the booking later if needed. If you already booked in the wrong name, call the airline immediately. Some carriers will correct a name at no charge if you can show a marriage certificate.

Update Your Driver’s License or State ID

State motor vehicle offices pull your information from the Social Security database, so wait at least 24 to 48 hours after the SSA processes the change before visiting. Bring your certified marriage certificate, your current license, and your new Social Security card (or at minimum, proof the SSA has processed the change). Most states require an in-person visit. Replacement fees generally fall between $10 and $40.

Your updated license becomes the ID you’ll show for almost every remaining item on the checklist, so get this done early. Banks, insurance companies, and other institutions want to see a government photo ID in your new name.

Notify Your Employer and Handle Taxes

Tell your employer’s payroll or HR department as soon as possible. If the name on your paycheck doesn’t match SSA records, your wages may not post correctly to your Social Security earnings record, which can lower future benefits and cause tax filing delays.4Social Security Administration. Submit a new Form W-4 so your withholding records reflect your current legal name.8Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate

You don’t need a separate IRS form to report the name change. The IRS pulls name data from the Social Security Administration, so once you’ve updated with the SSA, the IRS record follows. What matters is that the name on your tax return matches what the SSA has on file. If you file before the SSA has processed your change, use your former name on the return to avoid processing delays.9Internal Revenue Service. Name Changes and Social Security Number Matching Issues

Update Financial Accounts

Banks and credit card companies generally require a visit to a branch or a call to customer service with your updated government photo ID and marriage certificate. Some let you start the process online, but most require in-person verification to finalize it. Move quickly, because a mismatch between the name on your ID and the name on your account can trigger fraud alerts or hold up transactions.

Don’t overlook investment and retirement accounts. Beneficiary designations on 401(k)s, IRAs, and life insurance policies should be reviewed to confirm the correct legal names of everyone listed. Marriage often changes who you want as a beneficiary anyway, so this is a good moment to look at those designations across the board.

Update Insurance Policies

Contact every insurer you hold a policy with: health, auto, homeowner’s or renter’s, and life insurance. A name mismatch between your insurance records and your legal ID can create problems when you file a claim. Most insurers will update your name over the phone or online once you provide a copy of your marriage certificate and updated ID. If you’re being added to a spouse’s policy, handle the name change and the coverage change together to avoid duplicate paperwork.

Update Your Voter Registration

If you don’t update your voter registration, the name on the rolls won’t match your current ID, which can create problems at the polls. Visit vote.gov, select your state, and follow the instructions. Some states let you update online; others require a mailed form or a visit to your local election office.10USAGov. How to Update or Change Your Voter Registration Registration deadlines vary, typically falling 15 to 30 days before an election. If an election is approaching, handle this early.

Update Vehicle Title and Registration

Rules vary by state, but you’ll generally submit a correction form to your state’s motor vehicle agency along with a copy of your updated driver’s license. Some states charge a fee for a corrected title; others handle name-change corrections at no cost. If you have an active vehicle loan, notify your lender so the lienholder’s records match your current legal name.

Update Property Records

If you own real estate, the name on your deed may not match your new legal name. That won’t affect your ownership, but it can create headaches when you refinance, sell, or take out a home equity loan, because title companies will flag the discrepancy. The typical fix is recording a new deed or a name-change affidavit with your county recorder’s office. Notify your mortgage lender as well. Consulting a real estate attorney can save time here, especially if the property is jointly owned or held in a trust.

For Green Card Holders: Replace Your Permanent Resident Card

Permanent residents who change their name through marriage file Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card) with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, either online through a USCIS account or by mail.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) The filing fee is $465 for paper applications or $415 online.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. G-1055 Fee Schedule Conditional residents cannot use Form I-90 and must file Form I-751 to remove conditions on their residence.

Professional and Academic Credentials

If you hold a professional license in nursing, law, medicine, teaching, real estate, accounting, or a similar field, contact your state licensing board. Some states require written notification within 30 days of a name change, and the board may ask for a copy of your marriage certificate along with proof of your new legal name. Fees vary. Skipping this step can create verification problems with employers or clients who check your credentials.

Academic records matter too. Most colleges and universities will update alumni records and reissue transcripts in your new name, which can matter when you apply for graduate programs or jobs that verify credentials against official transcripts.

The Cleanup List

Once the major government and financial accounts are handled, a tail of smaller updates remains. Utility companies, cell phone providers, email accounts, subscription services, frequent flyer programs, gym memberships, doctors’ offices, pharmacy records, and mail. A change-of-name notice to the post office won’t redirect mail sent to your old name, so you’ll need to update individual senders. None of these require formal documentation beyond telling the company your new name, though some may ask to see an updated ID. Work through them in batches over a few weeks rather than one marathon session.
