Nursys Database: QuickConfirm Search, e-Notify, and Endorsement

Nursys license verification is handled through nursys.com, the national database run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). The free QuickConfirm tool lets anyone look up a nurse’s current license status, expiration date, compact status, and public disciplinary actions in seconds. Nurses moving to a new state can also use the site to send official verification to another board for $30 per license type. Data comes directly from 58 participating boards covering all 50 states, D.C., and most U.S. territories.1Nursys. About Nursys

How to Run a Free QuickConfirm Search

QuickConfirm requires no account and costs nothing.2NCSBN Help Center. How do I do a Nursys license search Go to nursys.com, open the QuickConfirm section, and enter either the nurse’s name or license number. Searching by license number gives the cleanest result, especially when the name is common. If you only have a name, try variations: maiden names, previous married names, nicknames spelled out.

Results appear within seconds. Click a specific record to see the detailed view with license status, expiration date, compact status, and any publicly reported disciplinary action. You can download the verification report, which is what employers typically save to a credentialing file.

What the Record Shows

Each Nursys record covers Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurses from participating boards. The status field tells you whether the license is active, expired, or lapsed, with expiration date and compact status attached. Compact status matters because a multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact currently allows practice across 43 NLC member jurisdictions without a separate license in each one.3National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Discipline is the other half of the record. When a board of nursing takes formal action, the information flows into Nursys and becomes publicly visible: revocations, suspensions, probation, and practice limitations all show up.4National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Reporting and Enforcement Boards submit updates regularly, so what you see reflects current standing rather than an old snapshot.

When Nursys Will Not Have the Record

A blank search result does not always mean a nurse is unlicensed. Two gaps are worth knowing about before you draw conclusions.

Puerto Rico is not on the participating jurisdictions list.5Nursys. Nurse License Verification for Endorsement Jurisdictions If the license was issued by a non-participating board, Nursys will not carry it, and you have to contact that board directly.

Advanced practice coverage is also incomplete. Nursys tracks APRN credentials (nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse midwives, and certified registered nurse anesthetists), but only some participating boards submit APRN data.6Nursys. Nursys Frequently Asked Questions If an advanced practice license does not appear, go to the issuing board.

Does the Verification Count for Employers

Yes. The Joint Commission recognizes Nursys as meeting its principles for primary source credentials verification, because the data comes straight from the boards of nursing rather than through an intermediary.7Nursys. Nursys and The Joint Commission Participating boards designate Nursys as a primary source equivalent in writing. A downloaded QuickConfirm report can satisfy the credentialing requirements facilities face during accreditation surveys.

Endorsement Verification for Nurses Moving to a New State

If you are applying for a license in a new state, the receiving board usually needs official verification from every state where you have ever held a license. Nursys handles that electronically, which beats mailing paper requests to each old board.8NCSBN Help Center. How do I send a verification for endorsement

From nursys.com, click “Request Verification,” find your license (by number if possible), and pick the destination state or states. The fee is $30 for each license type sent to each destination; verifying both an RN and an LPN/VN to the same state is $60.9NCSBN Help Center. What is the fee for Nurse License Verification for Endorsement Once payment goes through, the destination board gets immediate electronic access and you get an email receipt.

This is only the verification piece. You still have to submit a separate license application to the new state’s board. And if the destination needs verification from a non-participating board, or from an APRN license whose board does not report to Nursys, you will have to contact that board yourself.

Automatic Alerts With e-Notify

Nursys e-Notify is a free service that sends email alerts whenever something changes on a nurse’s record: license status, expiration date, compact status, or public disciplinary action.10National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Nursys e-Notify

Individual nurses can enroll to get expiration reminders and status alerts for their own licenses. Every licensed nurse has an NCSBN ID, a unique identifier that ties together all licenses held by that nurse across jurisdictions and license types; you can look yours up on nursys.com during registration.11National Council of State Boards of Nursing. NCSBN ID One account tracks every state you are licensed in.

Employers can create an institutional account, enroll an entire nursing staff (bulk uploads are supported), and receive automatic alerts on every nurse enrolled. The service is free for institutions as well.12Nursys. Nursys Frequently Asked Questions

Fixing Incorrect Information

Nursys only displays what the boards submit, so corrections have to happen at the board, not through NCSBN. Contact the board of nursing that issued the license and give them the correct information. Once the board updates its own records, the change flows into Nursys with the next data submission.13NCSBN Help Center. My information in Nursys is wrong. How do I correct it? There is no way to edit a record directly on the site.
