A school exit interview is the structured wrap-up a college or university runs when you graduate, withdraw, or drop below half-time enrollment. For students who borrowed federal loans, the central piece is mandatory exit counseling required by federal law. For departing employees, the same term covers a voluntary feedback session paired with property return and benefits paperwork. Finishing the process is what releases your transcript, diploma, final paycheck, and other records you’ll need next.
Who Has to Complete Federal Loan Exit Counseling
If you borrowed Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, or graduate or professional PLUS Loans, you must complete exit counseling before you leave school. The trigger isn’t just graduation. It also fires when you withdraw, drop below half-time, or leave for any other reason, even if you plan to enroll somewhere else later.1Federal Student Aid. Complete Student Loan Exit Counseling The requirement comes from 20 U.S.C. ยง 1092, which obligates every school in the federal aid system to deliver this counseling to covered borrowers.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1092 – Institutional and Financial Assistance Information for Students
Parent PLUS borrowers are not required to complete exit counseling. Everyone else on the list is.
The duty runs in both directions. Federal regulations require your school to ensure counseling happens and to keep documentation proving each borrower completed it.3eCFR. 34 CFR 685.304 – Borrower Counseling If you forget, the school will come looking.
What Exit Counseling Covers
This isn’t a signature on a form. Federal law lists specific topics the counseling must walk you through:2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1092 – Institutional and Financial Assistance Information for Students
- Every available repayment plan, with sample monthly payments and total interest for each.
- Loan forgiveness and cancellation programs, including Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and the conditions to qualify.
- Deferment and forbearance rules, and what happens to interest while payments are paused.
- Default consequences: credit damage, federal debt collection, and potential litigation.
- How consolidation changes your interest, fees, timeline, and eligibility for grace periods and forgiveness.
- Tax deductions and credits available to borrowers.
- A warning about third-party debt relief companies offering services your servicer and the Department of Education provide for free.

How to Complete It
Most students complete exit counseling online at StudentAid.gov. You’ll need a verified StudentAid.gov account, your school name, and current contact information. Plan on about 30 minutes, in one sitting. The system doesn’t let you save progress and return, and it times out after 15 minutes of inactivity.1Federal Student Aid. Schools can also run counseling in person, through an audiovisual presentation, or through their own interactive tool. In any format, someone with expertise in federal aid must be available to answer your questions shortly afterward.3eCFR. 34 CFR 685.304 – Borrower Counseling Correspondence and study-abroad students can receive written materials instead, within 30 days of program completion.
What Happens If You Skip It
You can’t permanently avoid exit counseling. If you leave without completing it, regulations require your school to deliver the materials within 30 days, either through an online tool, by mail to your last known address, or by email to a non-school account you provided.3eCFR. 34 CFR 685.304 – Borrower Counseling
The practical problem is the hold. Federal law doesn’t specifically authorize transcript or diploma holds for incomplete counseling, but many schools impose them anyway as institutional policy. Registrars won’t release official transcripts or process diplomas until the system shows counseling complete. If a job offer or graduate admission is waiting on documentation, that hold becomes expensive fast. Completion is also reported to the National Student Loan Data System, so your servicer will know whether you finished.4Federal Student Aid. NSLDS Exit Counseling Submittal
Institutional Clearance: Balances and Property
Alongside the federal piece, most schools run their own clearance checklist. This part is governed by institutional policy, not federal law, so specifics vary.
Outstanding balances usually come first. Library fines, lab fees, equipment charges, and parking citations all have to be resolved. Some schools block transcript release and diploma processing for balances as low as $25. Keep receipts or screenshots of payments. Internal systems don’t always update right away, and you’ll want proof if a hold lingers.
Property return is simpler but easy to overlook: library books, lab equipment, residence hall keys, parking passes, laptops, hotspots, anything issued to you. Most schools won’t finalize your exit until every item is checked back in.
Update Your Contact Information Before You Leave
Give both the registrar and the financial aid office a non-school email and a permanent mailing address. Two reasons.
Your school is required to send IRS Form 1098-T, which reports tuition payments and may affect your education tax credits. The instructions require institutions to use your permanent address, meaning a home or long-term address where you can receive forwarded mail.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1098-E and 1098-T (2026) A wrong address can mean no form in time to file.
Your loan servicer and the school will also use that contact information going forward. Missed notices about repayment deadlines, deferment windows, or alumni services usually trace back to an address that was never updated.
Save What’s in Your School Accounts
Your school email, cloud storage, learning management system, and digital library access all expire after you leave. Some institutions cut access within weeks, others give several months. Deactivation is automatic, and once it happens, anything stored in those accounts is gone.
Before your exit date:
- Download important emails and files from your school account and any linked cloud storage.
- Change the login email on any personal services tied to your school address, including streaming, banking, and social media.
- Back up coursework, research data, and shared project files stored on institutional platforms.
- Reroute anything you set to forward from your school email. Forwarding stops when the account shuts down.
Extra Steps for International Students
F-1 and M-1 visa holders have additional obligations tied to immigration status. When you finish your program, your Designated School Official must update your SEVIS record within 21 days to reflect graduation or early completion.6U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. SEVIS Reporting Requirements for Designated School Officials This is a federal reporting requirement under 8 CFR 214.3(g), not an optional step.
After your program ends, F-1 students get a 60-day grace period to depart the United States, transfer to a new program, or apply to USCIS for a change of status.7eCFR. 8 CFR 214.2 – Special Requirements for Admission, Extension, and Maintenance of Status M-1 students get 30 days.8Study in the States. Complete Student SEVIS Status You’re considered to be maintaining nonimmigrant status during the grace period,9USCIS. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 2 Part F Chapter 8 – Change of Status, Extension of Stay, and Length of Stay but if you leave the country before it runs out, the remaining time is lost. You can’t re-enter and resume it.
Coordinate with your international student office before anything is finalized. Once a DSO manually completes your SEVIS record, your grace period ends immediately, and you can’t print a new Form I-20 or take further action without applying for reinstatement.8Study in the States. Complete Student SEVIS Status If you plan to apply for Optional Practical Training or similar authorization, make sure that paperwork is in motion before the DSO closes your record.
Exit Interviews for School Employees
If you’re staff or faculty leaving a school, “exit interview” means something different. It’s a feedback session about working conditions, management, and your reasons for leaving. Unlike student loan counseling, it isn’t federally mandated and is almost always voluntary.
The administrative side is what matters most for timing. Return ID badges, office and cabinet keys, parking permits, any school-issued laptops or mobile devices, and institutional credit or purchasing cards. Items you don’t return can delay your final paycheck or come out of it.
Two benefits issues move on their own clocks. Final paycheck deadlines are set by state law, with some states requiring payment on your last day and others allowing until the next regular payday. Confirm the rule with HR or your state labor department. And if you had employer-sponsored health insurance, the plan administrator generally must provide COBRA continuation coverage information within 44 days of your last day.10CMS. COBRA Continuation Coverage Questions and Answers COBRA lets you keep the group health plan temporarily, at the full premium.
After Clearance
Once counseling is complete and institutional holds are released, you can order official transcripts and your diploma will be processed. Transcript fees commonly run between $5 and $25, with electronic delivery usually cheaper than paper. Factor that into your timing if you need documents for a job or graduate application right away.
Federal loan borrowers typically enter a six-month grace period after graduating or dropping below half-time. Payments aren’t due in that window, but interest may still accrue depending on the loan type. Use the time well: set up autopay with your servicer, review income-driven repayment options, and keep your contact information current so nothing slips through.
