The Bling Ring was a group of seven Southern California teenagers and young adults — Rachel Lee, Nick Prugo, Alexis Neiers (now Alexis Haines), Diana Tamayo, Courtney Ames, Roy Lopez Jr., and Johnny Ajar — who burglarized celebrity homes between late 2008 and mid-2009. More than a decade after their arrests, the real people of the Bling Ring have taken sharply different paths: one runs a recovery podcast, one cuts hair, one moved to Texas for oil field work, and one served additional time for stalking. Their sentences ranged from probation to four years in state prison, and their post-conviction lives have been shaped as much by the media attention as by the crimes themselves.
Who They Were
The group was made up of friends and acquaintances from the San Fernando Valley, most still in their teens when the burglaries began. They weren’t career criminals. They tracked celebrities’ whereabouts through tabloid sites and located their homes online, then walked in through unlocked doors, open windows, or cut fences.1NBC News. Celebrity Home Burglaries Over roughly ten months they took more than $3 million in cash, jewelry, designer clothing, and personal items from stars including Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, and Lindsay Lohan.2Crime Museum. Nick Prugo was arrested first, on September 17, 2009, after the LAPD released surveillance stills and callers identified him and Rachel Lee by name. He confessed almost immediately and named his accomplices, which led to search warrants and arrests of the rest of the group in October 2009.3Vanity Fair. The Suspects Wore Louboutins

The Ongoing Dispute Over Who Led It
The question of who ran the Bling Ring has never fully settled, and it now shapes how the two most visible members present themselves. Prugo, by confessing first, was in a position to describe Lee as the mastermind, and that framing dominated the Vanity Fair article, Sofia Coppola’s 2013 film, and the 2022 Netflix docuseries The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist. Alexis Haines, for her part, has criticized how she was portrayed in Coppola’s film. Emma Watson played a character based on her and described the role as someone “superficial, materialistic, vain, and amoral.” Haines later said Watson had not acknowledged the addiction and sexual abuse Haines was struggling with at the time of the crimes.24i-D.
