Eligible consumers were then contacted by email, and some by postcard, with a claimant ID that let them log in to the settlement site to confirm a mailing address or add a PayPal or Venmo handle for electronic payment.4Office of the Illinois Attorney General. • Identify the state where you filed federal returns in 2016, 2017, and 2018. If you moved during those years, check each state.

Watch for Fake Claim Forms

Because so many people are searching for a claim form that doesn’t exist, this settlement is a magnet for scams. A few markers separate real communications from fraudulent ones:

  • The real process never asked for a Social Security number or bank login. It asked only for a mailing address or a PayPal or Venmo handle.
  • The IRS does not email people about refunds or settlements. An email claiming to be the IRS about your TurboTax payment is a phishing attempt.7Internal Revenue Service. File Your Taxes for Free
