If a UPS package arrived after its guaranteed delivery time, you can request a UPS late delivery refund of the transportation charges, but you have only 15 calendar days from the scheduled delivery date to file. The shipment must have moved under a covered air or international express service, and no exclusion (weather, bad address, rerouting) can apply. Miss the 15-day window and the right to a refund is gone.
Which Shipments Are Actually Covered
The guarantee is narrower than most shippers assume. UPS Ground, UPS Standard, SurePost, and other non-express services have had their guarantees suspended since 2021, and UPS has not announced a reinstatement date. If your package moved by ground, there is no refund mechanism for a late delivery under the current policy.
Covered domestic air services are UPS Next Day Air Early, UPS Next Day Air, UPS Next Day Air Saver, and UPS 2nd Day Air A.M. On the international side, the guarantee applies to Worldwide Express Plus, Worldwide Express, Worldwide Express NA1, Worldwide Express Saver, Worldwide Saver, Worldwide Express Freight Midday, and Worldwide Express Freight.1UPS. Check the service code on your label or receipt before you spend any more time on a claim. Anything outside those two lists is excluded.
Confirming the Package Was Actually Late
Each eligible shipment has a specific commitment time tied to the origin zip, destination zip, and service level. A Next Day Air package to a major metro area might carry a 10:30 a.m. commitment; the same service to a rural address might run to end-of-day. The commitment appears on the shipping receipt and in the package’s tracking details, and you can also look it up through the “Calculate Time and Cost” tool on ups.com or by calling 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877).
A shipment counts as late when the first delivery attempt occurs after that commitment time. One minute past the deadline is enough. Note the word attempt. If the driver arrived on time and nobody was there to sign, or the business was closed, UPS met its obligation. What matters is the timestamp on the first delivery scan in the tracking history, not when the package was eventually picked up.
Transit time runs on business days only. Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays generally don’t count. A two-day air pickup on Thursday typically commits to Monday, not Saturday.
When UPS Will Deny the Refund
The tariff lists several categories of delay that void the guarantee. If any of them applies, the claim is going to be rejected no matter how late the package arrived.
Causes Outside UPS’s Control
Severe weather, natural disasters, pandemics, labor strikes, civil unrest, terrorism, government actions, customs delays, security regulations, disruptions to air or ground transportation networks, and failures in communication or information systems are all excluded. A winter storm grounding flights out of a hub or a government security directive holding up customs clearance will defeat the claim.2UPS. 2026 UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service
Shipper Errors
Mistakes on your end also kill the guarantee. Incomplete or incorrect addresses, improperly declared hazardous materials, and refused deliveries are all grounds for denial. The tariff specifically names “insufficient information provided by a customer” as a reason for rejection.2UPS. 2026 UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service
Any Change After Tender
This one surprises people. If you or the recipient changed anything about the shipment after it was handed to UPS, the guarantee no longer applies. That includes UPS Delivery Intercept requests, address corrections, and recipient rerouting through UPS My Choice. Once the package is redirected, the original commitment time stops mattering.2UPS. 2026 UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service
What to Pull Together Before You File
The online system won’t let you proceed without the basics, so collect them first:
- The UPS tracking number for the delayed shipment.
- Your UPS account number, if you have a billing account and want the credit applied to a future invoice.
- The ship date and the scheduled delivery date, both of which appear on the receipt and in tracking.
- The timestamp of the first delivery attempt from the tracking history.
Then watch the clock. The refund request must be submitted within 15 calendar days of the scheduled delivery date. After that, the claim is barred.3UPS. UPS Service Guarantee
How to File the Request
Account holders can file through the UPS Billing Center. Log in, open the invoice containing the delayed shipment, select the tracking number, and use the “Dispute” option to request a guaranteed service refund.4UPS. UPS Money-Back Guarantee You’ll get a confirmation number for tracking the claim.
Without Billing Center access, call 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877) and file by phone. Have the tracking number and account details in front of you before you call.
Approved refunds show up as a credit on the next billing cycle and cover the transportation charges for the delayed shipment. UPS issues a digital confirmation of the decision; keep it for your records. If the package was shipped from a retail location such as The UPS Store, you may need to work through that location to initiate the refund, because the store is the account holder of record.
If You Ship in Volume
Manually checking every delivery against its commitment is not realistic once volumes climb. Somewhere between 1% and 5% of weekly carrier invoices may contain refund-eligible late deliveries, with the share running higher for shippers who lean on express services. Third-party parcel audit tools can sync with your UPS billing data, flag late deliveries, and file claims inside the 15-day window on your behalf.
Manual or automated, the process is the same: identify the late shipment, confirm it ran under a covered service, verify that no exclusion applies, and file before day 15. Unclaimed refunds stay with UPS.
