A Verra Mobility charge on your credit card is almost always a toll you drove through in a rental car, plus a daily service fee the rental company’s toll program added on top. Verra Mobility processes electronic tolls and violation notices on behalf of Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, Budget, National, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, Fox, and Payless, operating under the consumer-facing brands PlatePass, TollPass, and e-Toll.1Verra Mobility. Rental Cars The charge typically appears four to eight weeks after the rental ends, which is why most people don’t recognize it when it hits the statement.2TollPassGo. TollPass National FAQ
Why the Charge Looks Unfamiliar
The statement descriptor can read “Hertz Toll,” “PlatePass,” “e-Toll,” “TollPass,” or simply reference Verra Mobility or ATS Processing Services. None of this appears on the standard rental receipt you got at drop-off. The amount is billed separately to the card on file, so the gap between the rental and the charge is usually long enough that the trip is a distant memory by the time you see it.2TollPassGo. TollPass National FAQ
Many rental agencies enroll customers in their toll program automatically the moment the vehicle passes through a toll point. There is often no opt-in moment at the counter; the enrollment is triggered by the act of using the toll road, and the authorization lives in the fine print of the rental agreement.3Golden Gate Bridge. Rental Toll Programs The agreement typically also authorizes release of your personal and payment information to ATS Processing Services, LLC, a Verra Mobility subsidiary, for processing tolls and violations and adding convenience fees on top of them.4Fox Rent A Car. What’s Inside the Charge
A Verra Mobility charge has two parts: the toll itself, and a daily service fee. The toll is usually billed at the highest undiscounted rate set by the tolling authority, not the discounted rate paid by drivers with their own transponder accounts.5Hertz. Tolls and PlatePass The service fee is where the brands differ.
Fees by rental program:
- TollPass (Alamo, Enterprise, National): $4.95 to $5.35 per usage day, capped at $34.65 per rental.6TollPassGo. TollPass Convenience FAQ
- e-Toll (Avis, Budget): $6.95 per rental day, capped at $34.95 per rental.3Golden Gate Bridge. Rental Toll Programs
- PlatePass (Hertz): a flat-rate “All-Inclusive” daily option that varies by state. Renters who decline the plan but still use electronic tollways are charged the full toll rate plus a $9.99 usage-day fee.5Hertz. Tolls and PlatePass
- PlatePass (Fox Rent A Car): all-inclusive rates of $13.99 to $14.49 per day depending on location, capped at 15 rental days. Renters who don’t opt in face a $15 administrative fee per toll, up to $90 per rental.4Fox Rent A Car. Toll Roads and Fees
- PlatePass (Budget Truck): up to $13 per usage day for consumer renters, plus the toll. Toll violation administrative fees can reach $50 per toll issuer.7Budget Truck. PlatePass
Match the charge against the brand you rented from and the number of days you actually drove through a toll. A single toll on one day of a weeklong rental still triggers the service fee for that usage day.
Disputing a Charge You Believe Is Wrong
Verra Mobility accepts disputes, but the process requires documentation. The company’s FAQ directs rental car customers to start with the rental company first, since each brand manages its own tolling program and customer support. If that doesn’t resolve things, Verra Mobility can be reached through the contact page by selecting the “Rental Car Tolling or Violation” inquiry type, or by calling its violation line at 1-877-977-5771.8Verra Mobility. FAQ For PlatePass charges specifically, customer service is at 877-411-4300 or help@platepass.com.5Hertz. Tolls and PlatePass
The strongest disputes have timestamped evidence that places you somewhere other than the toll, or outside the rental window entirely. Useful documentation includes:
- Gas or food receipts showing your location at the time of the disputed toll.
- Credit card transaction records with timestamps.
- The rental agreement confirming pickup and return dates.
- Mileage evidence showing the travel distance would have been impossible.9BBB. Verra Mobility Complaints
The company cannot accept hyperlinks, TXT files, or XLS files, and you should redact sensitive personal information before submitting documents. Consumers have reported success by pointing out timeline discrepancies, like tolls billed hours before the rental began or two tolls recorded in distant locations only minutes apart. Others have had charges reversed after filing complaints through the Better Business Bureau when initial direct inquiries were denied; the company has issued “goodwill adjustments” in many of these cases, removing disputed fees while maintaining that its billing was contractually valid.9BBB. Verra Mobility Complaints
Over a recent three-year period, Verra Mobility received 292 BBB complaints. Of those, 112 were classified as “resolved” (the consumer confirmed satisfaction) and 180 as “answered” (the company responded but the consumer did not confirm the resolution worked).9BBB. Verra Mobility Complaints The common patterns in those complaints are tolls charged outside rental dates, tolls charged despite a personal transponder being used, and a lack of verbal disclosure at the counter.
If It’s Not a Rental Toll
Verra Mobility also processes red-light, speed, school zone, and bus lane camera citations for government clients. If what you got is a citation rather than a credit card charge from a rental, the company directs recipients to violationinfo.com to view the citation, review the evidence, and pay or explore resolution options.8Verra Mobility. FAQ Requests for camera footage go to the local municipality or state, not to Verra Mobility.
How to Avoid the Fees Next Time
The surest way is to stay out of electronic toll lanes during a rental, which isn’t realistic in a lot of cities. Beyond that:
- Use your own transponder. If you have an E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak, or similar account, mount the transponder in the rental and add the rental car’s license plate to your account for the duration of the trip, so tolls hit you at your discounted rate instead of the rental company at the full rate.5Hertz. Tolls and PlatePass
- Keep the rental’s built-in transponder closed. Many rental vehicles have a transponder housed in a shield box on the windshield; left closed, it won’t register. You still have to pay the toll another way.3Golden Gate Bridge. Rental Toll Programs
- Pay the toll authority directly. Some agencies take one-time online payments. In the San Francisco Bay Area, drivers can make a one-time payment through FasTrak before crossing a bridge or within 48 hours after.3Golden Gate Bridge. Rental Toll Programs
- Pay cash where cash lanes still exist. Cashless tolling has become increasingly common, so this option is shrinking.
Get the rental car’s license plate number the moment you pick up the vehicle. Most direct-payment and personal-transponder options require it, and the counter is the easiest place to capture it.
