The documents needed for a name change after marriage start with one: a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Every other update — Social Security card, driver’s license, passport, bank accounts, voter registration — flows from that single document and the identification you already carry. Order the certified copies first, work through Social Security next, then your state ID, then everything else. Doing it out of order is where most people get stuck.
Certified Marriage Certificate
The decorative certificate you may have received at the ceremony isn’t what agencies want. You need a certified copy with a raised seal or registrar’s stamp from the vital records office or clerk’s office in the jurisdiction where your marriage license was issued.
Fees for a single certified copy typically run from about $3 to $35 depending on where you were married. Order at least three or four. Some agencies hold onto your copy during processing and won’t return it right away, and shuttling a single certificate between institutions by mail will slow every other step.
Social Security Card
Your Social Security record is the anchor for nearly every other name change. Banks, the DMV, the IRS, and your employer all verify your name against the Social Security Administration’s records, so if those still show your former name, other updates stall or create mismatches. Replacing the card is free.1Social Security Administration. Replace Social Security Card
You may be able to request the change online through your my Social Security account. Otherwise, make an appointment at a local SSA office or apply by mail. The new card arrives 5 to 10 business days after SSA completes the request.2Social Security Administration. Change Name With Social Security
For mail or in-person applications, you’ll need:
- Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, from the SSA website or a local office.3Social Security Administration. Application for Social Security Card Form SS-5
- Your certified marriage certificate.
- A current, unexpired ID such as a U.S. driver’s license, state ID card, or U.S. passport.
Every document must be an original or a copy certified by the issuing agency. SSA does not accept photocopies or notarized copies.
Driver’s License or State ID
Once your Social Security card reflects your new name, head to your state’s DMV or equivalent licensing agency. Most states won’t process a license name change until SSA is updated, because they verify against the SSA database.
Plan to bring:
- Your current driver’s license or state ID.
- Your certified marriage certificate.
- Your new Social Security card.
- Proof of residency, often a utility bill or bank statement showing your current address.
If your state issues REAL ID-compliant licenses, you may also need the full chain of documents linking your birth-certificate name to your married name — which means bringing the birth certificate. Replacement license fees generally run from about $5 to $44, and you’ll almost always need to appear in person.
U.S. Passport
Which passport form you use depends on when your current passport was issued and how recently your name changed. All three options require your current passport, your certified marriage certificate, and one passport photo.4U.S. Department of State. Change or Correct a Passport
Form DS-5504
Use DS-5504 only if both are true: your passport was issued less than one year ago, and your name change happened less than one year after that passport was issued. No fee, unless you want expedited service for an extra $60. Submit by mail.
Form DS-82
If you don’t qualify for DS-5504, renew by mail with DS-82 as long as your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older, was issued within the last 15 years, is undamaged, and you can document the name change. The adult passport book fee is $130.5U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees
Form DS-11
If your passport was issued more than 15 years ago, or you were under 16 when it was issued, apply in person at a passport acceptance facility using DS-11. The adult book fee is $130 plus a $35 facility acceptance fee, for a total of $165. Bring a valid photo ID with a photocopy in addition to the standard documents.
Tax and Employer Records
The IRS checks the name on your return against SSA records. If they don’t match, an electronic return can be rejected and a paper return may face delays that hold up your refund.6Internal Revenue Service. Voter Registration and Remaining Accounts
You’re required to update your voter registration after a legal name change, and each state sets its own deadline relative to the next election. Visit vote.gov and select your state for online, mail, or in-person instructions. Most states also accept the National Mail Voter Registration Form.9USAGov. How to Update or Change Your Voter Registration
For everything else, your updated driver’s license and Social Security card are usually enough. Work through the list roughly in order of financial importance:
- Bank, credit card, and investment accounts. Branches want the new ID and marriage certificate; credit card issuers often handle it by phone or online.
- Insurance policies for health, auto, homeowner’s, and life. A name mismatch on a health claim can delay reimbursement.
- Vehicle title and registration, through your state’s DMV, typically for a separate fee of roughly $28 to $75.
- Professional licenses from nursing boards, bar associations, CPA boards, and similar agencies, each with its own process and sometimes a small fee.
- Utility accounts and subscriptions. Low stakes, but keeping these consistent protects your proof-of-residency documents for future ID renewals.
A Note on Travel Booked Around the Wedding
Until you physically have an updated ID in hand, your legal name for travel purposes is still your former name.
