Costco’s tire warranty coverage comes as three separate protections bundled free with every tire purchase at a Costco Tire Center: a five-year road hazard warranty from Costco itself, the tire manufacturer’s warranty on defects and treadwear, and a lifetime maintenance package covering rotations, balancing, nitrogen fills, and flat repairs for as long as you own the tires.1Costco Tire. Costco Advantage All three are included automatically. Nothing to sign up for, no add-on fee at checkout.
What the Road Hazard Warranty Covers
This is the one most buyers are asking about. It covers tires that become unusable because of road hazards: cuts, non-repairable punctures, and impact damage from things like potholes or debris on the highway.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions Run over a nail that can’t be patched, or crack a sidewall on a pothole, and this is the coverage that applies.
It lasts 60 months from the date of purchase or until the tire wears down to 2/32 of an inch of remaining tread, whichever comes first.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions That 2/32 figure is the legal wear-out point, where the tread wear indicators sit flush with the surrounding rubber. Once a tire hits it, the warranty is finished regardless of age.
How the Prorated Credit Is Calculated
This is not a full-replacement warranty. When a covered tire fails, you get a prorated credit toward a new tire based on how much usable tread is left. Costco defines usable tread as the original tread depth minus 2/32 of an inch, then multiplies the fraction of usable tread remaining by the net price you paid for that tire.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
In practice, a nearly new tire that gets destroyed earns back most of what you paid. A half-worn tire gets you roughly half. A tire close to 2/32 of an inch is worth very little. The credit applies only to the specific damaged tire, not to matching the other three on the vehicle.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
What Can Get a Claim Denied
The exclusion list is long. The road hazard warranty does not cover damage caused by:
- Accidents or vandalism
- Commercial use, racing, or off-road driving
- Snow chains or studs
- Rapid or irregular tread wear, such as from worn suspension components or misaligned wheels
- Transferring tires to a different vehicle from the one they were originally installed on
That last one catches people. Sell your car and move the tires to a new vehicle, or swap them between cars you own, and the warranty is voided. Costco’s terms contain no exceptions for same-household transfers or vehicle replacements.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
Maintenance matters too. Costco requires tires to be rotated and balanced on the vehicle manufacturer’s schedule, inflated to the recommended pressure, and that the steering and suspension be in proper working condition.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions One practical note: avoid Fix-a-Flat and similar aerosol sealants if you can. They can render a tire non-repairable, which may affect eligibility.3Costco Tire. Costco Road Hazard Warranty
Repairable Flats vs. Road Hazard Claims
Not every flat triggers the road hazard warranty. Pick up a nail in the tread and the puncture is repairable, Costco fixes it for free under the lifetime maintenance package. No warranty claim needed.1Costco Tire. Costco Advantage
Costco follows USTMA repair standards. A puncture qualifies as repairable only if it’s in the center tread area, no larger than 1/4 inch in diameter, and doesn’t overlap a previous repair.4USTMA. Tire Repair Basics The tire has to come off the rim for interior inspection, and the fix must be a combination plug-and-patch rather than a plug alone.5Tire Industry Association. Tire Repair
Anything outside those limits — sidewall punctures, large gashes, pothole impact damage — is non-repairable, and that’s when the road hazard warranty applies and the prorated credit kicks in.3Costco Tire. Costco Road Hazard Warranty
The Manufacturer’s Warranty
Costco’s road hazard warranty operates separately from the warranty that comes from the tire manufacturer. The two cover different things and don’t replace each other.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions Costco handles road hazard damage. The manufacturer covers defects in materials and workmanship, and most brands add a mileage treadwear guarantee on top.
Terms vary by brand. Costco’s warranty page provides separate brochures for Michelin, BFGoodrich, Bridgestone, and Firestone.6Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty A few highlights worth knowing before you buy:
Bridgestone and Firestone tires sold at Costco carry a limited workmanship-and-materials warranty plus a limited mileage warranty. If they don’t last the warranted mileage, Bridgestone prorates a replacement price based on the percentage of mileage you did get, multiplied by what you paid. Road hazard damage, irregular wear, commercial use, and tires more than 10 years old from the manufacture date are excluded.7Firestone Tire. Bridgestone Warranty Manual, Costco US 2025
Michelin tires come with the Michelin Promise Plan: a 60-day satisfaction guarantee allowing an exchange, three years of 24/7 roadside assistance including towing up to 150 miles if you don’t have an inflated spare, and defect coverage for six years or the life of the usable tread. If a Michelin tire fails from a workmanship or materials defect within 12 months or before 25% of the tread is worn, it’s replaced free. There’s also a mileage treadwear warranty, but keeping it in force requires rotating every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.8Michelin. Michelin Replacement Tires Owner’s Manual Warranty
What the Lifetime Maintenance Package Includes
Every tire purchase from Costco comes with a bundle of maintenance services at no additional cost for the life of the tires: rotations, balancing, inflation pressure checks, flat repairs, and new rubber valve stems at installation. Costco uses nitrogen rather than regular compressed air, which holds pressure more consistently over time.1Costco Tire. Costco Advantage Warehouses also have a self-service inflation station, generally open during gas station hours.9Costco Customer Service. Tire Center FAQs
One cost is not included: TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) hardware. Costco charges a TPMS service pack fee of about $2.99 per tire for new seals, grommets, valve cores, and stems. If a TPMS sensor itself needs replacing, that runs roughly $45 per sensor plus about $15 in labor.10Yahoo Autos. How Much Is a TPMS Sensor at Costco
Costco also does not perform wheel alignments, so if irregular wear is pointing at an alignment problem, you’ll need another shop for that work.11Clark.com. Costco Tire Center
How To File a Claim
All warranty service — road hazard, flat repair, rotations, anything — has to be done at a Costco Tire Center. Costco does not install or service tires purchased elsewhere, and it won’t process warranty work at outside shops.9Costco Customer Service. Tire Center FAQs
For a road hazard claim, bring the damaged tire and your original purchase receipt. A technician inspects the tire to confirm it meets the definition of a road hazard failure and that you’ve kept up with manufacturer-spec maintenance. If approved, you sign a tire adjustment form and receive the prorated credit toward a replacement.2Costco Tire. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
Appointments can be booked at costcotireappointments.com and are recommended. Walk-ins get served when bays are open, but waits of a couple of hours are common during busy periods, even with an appointment.12Costco. Seattle, WA Warehouse
