HP’s standard limited warranty covers hardware defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a set period that depends on the product. If a covered part fails because of a manufacturing defect, HP will repair it, replace it, or refund the purchase price at its discretion.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support Everything else — accidents, software problems, wear, damage from unauthorized repairs or outside forces — sits outside that promise unless you’ve bought additional coverage.
What Hardware Defects Are Covered
The warranty applies to HP-branded and Compaq-branded hardware and its internal components, including processors, memory, system boards, and hard drives. A hard drive that HP’s own diagnostic tool flags as approaching failure can qualify for warranty service even before it fully fails.2HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
Replacement parts may be new or refurbished. HP states they will be “functionally equivalent to new in performance and reliability.”1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support A replaced or repaired part is itself warranted for 90 days or the remainder of the original warranty period, whichever is longer.3HP. How Long Coverage Lasts
There is no single warranty length across HP’s lineup. The duration appears on each product’s description page. Most consumer laptops ship with one year of coverage, while commercial products such as business PCs and servers typically come with three years.4HP. Understanding HP Warranty Support Workstations often include three years of parts and labor.5HP. Several product categories have their own rules:
- Notebook batteries are warranted for the laptop’s warranty period or 1,000 charge cycles, whichever comes first. Gradual loss of charge capacity is not covered unless it stems from a manufacturing defect.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support
- HP-branded accessories installed in an HP product are covered for the term in the accessory’s documentation or the remainder of the host product’s warranty, whichever is longer, up to a maximum of three years.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support
- Original HP ink cartridges are covered until the ink runs out or the printed “Warranty Ends” date passes, whichever comes first. Customer-replaceable printheads are covered until the warranty end date or a usage limit.6HP Support. HP Ink Supplies Limited Warranty
- Original HP LaserJet toner cartridges, imaging drums, and imaging units are warranted against defects until they are empty or reach end of useful life.7HP Support. HP Print Cartridge Limited Warranty Statement
- A monitor sold as part of a single-SKU computer bundle takes the computer’s warranty period.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support
What the Warranty Excludes
The exclusions list is where most denied claims live. HP’s warranty is a hardware-defect warranty, so anything caused by the user, the environment, or outside forces falls outside it.
- Accidental and physical damage, including drops, liquid spills, cracked screens, and broken hinges.8HP Support. HP Standard Limited Warranty Validation
- Software of any kind, including the operating system and apps preinstalled on the machine.2HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
- Normal wear and tear, including cosmetic deterioration, keyboard fading, and general aging.4HP. Understanding HP Warranty Support
- Damage from service by anyone other than HP or an HP-authorized provider, and damage from use of non-HP parts not sold or approved by HP.3HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
- Power surges, natural disasters, operation outside the product’s specified environmental parameters, and virus infections.8HP Support. HP Standard Limited Warranty Validation
- Consumable and expendable parts such as removable batteries treated as consumables and maintenance kits.3HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
- Hardware found to have been overclocked, except for defects unrelated to the overclocking.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support
- Products with removed or tampered identification labels.2HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
- Lost data. HP accepts no responsibility for data stored on the device, whether lost during failure or during repair, and expects you to back up before sending anything in.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support
One point about third-party printer supplies: using non-HP or refilled ink and toner cartridges does not automatically void a printer’s warranty. If HP determines that a non-HP cartridge caused the failure, however, it will charge standard repair fees for that specific damage.7HP Support. HP Print Cartridge Limited Warranty Statement
Does Upgrading RAM or an SSD Void the Warranty
Upgrading user-serviceable components like memory or a drive does not void the warranty outright, though HP states it “neither recommends nor supports” the practice. The new part itself is not covered, and if the upgrade damages other components, those repairs will be billed.9HP Support Community. Will Upgrading SSD Void Warranty HP publishes Maintenance and Service Guides with customer self-repair instructions for most laptops, which indicates certain upgrades are expected.10HP Support Community. Users have reported cases where HP representatives cited the “unauthorized fixes and replacements” clause to deny claims on unrelated parts (for example, a battery claim denied after RAM was installed). Community guidance in those situations is to escalate and reference the official Maintenance and Service Guide for the model.11HP Support Community. HP Says Warranty Voided by Installing RAM
Software and Technical Support
Because software is excluded, Windows and the preinstalled applications on your HP are not covered under the hardware warranty. HP does include 90 days of complimentary phone-based technical support for preinstalled software from the date of purchase, covering setup, installation, and questions about HP-supplied software. After those 90 days, phone-based software support is available only for a fee.2HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
Monitor and All-in-One Pixel Defects
For HP monitors and All-in-One PCs, a full pixel defect — a dot that stays entirely white or black — has zero tolerance, so even one qualifies for warranty service. Sub-pixel defects are judged against a threshold: up to two bright sub-pixel defects and up to five dark sub-pixel defects are considered within acceptable limits, with a combined maximum of five total sub-pixel defects before the panel is deemed defective.12HP Support Community. International Service and Resold Devices
HP hardware warranties travel with the product across borders. A device bought in one country can be serviced under warranty in another, provided HP or an authorized provider services that specific model in the destination country.1HP Support. HP Worldwide Limited Warranty and Technical Support Service terms and response times may vary by region, and HP is not responsible for tariffs or duties on products moved internationally.5HP. The warranty is tied to the hardware serial number rather than the original buyer, so a second owner can receive service for the remainder of the coverage period.13HP Support Community. How To Check Warranty Status and Start a Claim
To check status, go to HP’s Product Warranty Check page, select the country where you bought the device, enter the serial number, and submit. The tool shows warranty status, product category, and the warranty end date.15HP Support. Find Your HP Product Warranty Serial numbers appear on a label on the device (bottom, back, or battery compartment) and can also be pulled up with keyboard shortcuts: Fn + Esc on laptops, Ctrl + Alt + S on desktops, or Alt + V on Chromebook sign-in screens.16HP Support. To open a repair, HP recommends starting with its diagnostics. The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool, available in Windows and from the UEFI boot menu, tests the battery, memory, hard drive, and processor. A detected failure produces a 24-digit failure ID. Entering that code and the product number on HP’s repair portal starts the repair automatically. Physical damage that diagnostics can’t see, such as a cracked screen or a broken hinge, needs to be reported through the HP Contact Us page, by phone, or through live chat.17HP Support. Service usually takes one of a few forms: pickup and return with a prepaid shipping label, carry-in service at an authorized provider, mail-in service, or customer self-repair where HP ships you the part with installation guidance.1HP Support. Extending Coverage With HP Care Packs
HP Care Packs extend the warranty and can add services the standard warranty doesn’t include. Consumer Care Packs can be bought within the first year of the device’s life. Commercial Care Packs should be purchased at the time of sale or within 90 days. Plans run two, three, or four years and can include onsite repair, where a technician visits within three business days.18HP. HP Care Pack FAQ
The most useful add-on for most owners is Accidental Damage Protection, which covers unintentional liquid spills, drops and falls, and electrical surges — the main things the standard warranty excludes. ADP must be purchased before any damage happens. On consumer plans, coverage is limited to one accidental damage claim per year; any further repairs that year are billed at standard rates. Total liability under ADP is capped at the device’s original purchase price, and theft, fire, normal wear and tear, purely cosmetic damage that doesn’t affect function, and intentional damage are still excluded.19HP. HP Consumer ADP Care Pack Subscription Terms of Service Claims must be reported within 30 days of the incident.20HP. HP ADP Care Pack Datasheet
If your standard warranty has already run out, HP sells post-warranty Care Packs. Consumer post-warranty plans can be purchased from 90 days before the base warranty ends up to 12 months after it expires. Commercial post-warranty plans have a tighter window: 90 days before to 30 days after expiration.18HP. HP Care Pack FAQ
Liability Limits and Your Separate Legal Rights
HP’s maximum liability under the warranty is the lesser of what you paid for the product or the cost of repairing or replacing the defective hardware. The company disclaims indirect and consequential damages, including lost profits, lost data, and lost savings, and does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.3HP. HP Computer Products Limited Warranty Statement
The HP Limited Warranty sits alongside any statutory consumer rights available under local or national law, not in place of them. In the United States, the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires manufacturers to disclose warranty terms clearly and prevents them from eliminating implied warranties when they offer an express one. Implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose may give you broader protection than HP’s express warranty, and state lemon laws and consumer protection statutes can also apply, with specifics varying by jurisdiction.21Justia. Lemon Law If HP fails to repair a product within a reasonable time or after a reasonable number of attempts, you may have options outside the warranty’s stated remedies, including revoking acceptance of the product or filing in small claims court.
