What Does My Best Buy Total Membership Cover?

My Best Buy Total covers a lot for its $199.99 annual fee: automatic product protection on most things you buy at Best Buy, 24/7 Geek Squad tech support for any of your devices, free in-store and remote computer and tablet services, a 20% discount on Geek Squad repair labor, a VIP customer support line, 1% back in rewards, free two-day shipping, and a 60-day return window on most products.¹²³

Product Protection on What You Buy

This is the benefit that makes Total different from the cheaper tiers. While your membership is active, most new products you buy at Best Buy are automatically covered for up to 24 months at no charge beyond the membership fee itself. Apple devices get AppleCare+. Everything else gets Best Buy Protection.⁴

Non-Apple Products

Best Buy Protection handles mechanical failures, defects in materials and workmanship, normal wear and tear, power surges, defective pixels, screen burn-in, and battery failure. Portable products often also get accidental damage from handling coverage for drops, spills, and cracks, and your receipt notes whether a given item qualifies.⁵ Covered categories include TVs and home theater, computers and tablets, smart home and security, appliances, cell phones, cameras, gaming and VR, portable audio, car electronics, wearable tech, and drones.⁴

Claims aren’t free. Once the manufacturer’s warranty is past, you pay a service fee based on the product’s original price:⁴

$100 to $199.99: $29
$200 to $499.99: $49
$500 to $999.99: $79
$1,000 and up: $99

You’re limited to two covered claims per product in any 12-month period, and that counter resets on each anniversary.⁵

Apple Products

Apple purchases come with AppleCare+ instead, which includes phone technical support from Apple and accidental damage coverage. Service fees depend on the device. iPhone screen or back glass repair is $29 and other accidental damage is $99. Mac screen or enclosure repair is $99 (or $49 on certain newer models), with other damage at $299 (or $149 on those models). iPad repairs start at $49, Apple Watch claims are $69 or $79 depending on the line, and headphones, iPods, and Apple TV claims run $15 to $29.⁴

What Protection Doesn’t Cover

Only products bought directly from Best Buy qualify; items sold by third parties on Best Buy’s Marketplace are excluded.⁴ Loss and theft are not covered, though separate insurance can be bought for that.⁶ Cosmetic damage that doesn’t affect how a product works is also excluded.⁵ And this is the one to pay attention to: if your membership ends for any reason, every protection plan attached to it ends the same day.

Geek Squad Tech Support

Total members have 24/7 access to Geek Squad by phone, chat, or in-store visit, and the support covers any of your devices, including ones you didn’t buy at Best Buy.⁷ This is general troubleshooting and advice: getting a device configured, diagnosing software problems, sorting out a network issue.

Beyond that general support line, the membership includes a defined set of computer and tablet services at no extra cost:⁸

In-store: PC or tablet setup, hardware installation, virus removal and operating system repair, and data backup or transfer.
Remote: operating system tune-up and upgrade, software setup or troubleshooting, virus removal and OS repair, and network setup or troubleshooting.

For context, Best Buy normally charges $39.99 for in-store PC setup and $149.99 for virus removal and OS repair, so one real problem can recoup a chunk of the annual fee.⁹

In-home setup and troubleshooting are not part of the standard benefit. If Geek Squad decides a problem can’t be solved remotely or in-store, they may offer to come to you, but that visit costs extra. Autotech services are also excluded.⁶

VIP Customer Support

Separate from Geek Squad, Total members get a VIP customer support line staffed around the clock by a specially trained team that handles general customer service, coordination, and product advice. To be recognized on the phone, call from the number on your account; for online or in-app support, just be signed in.⁶

20% Off Geek Squad Repair Labor

Total members get 20% off the labor cost of Geek Squad repairs, including many in-home repairs. The discount applies to labor only, not parts, accessories, or permits, and it doesn’t apply to work done by an authorized third-party provider outside the scope of a Best Buy order.⁶ The product being repaired doesn’t have to be one you bought at Best Buy, which makes this useful for older or third-party gear.¹

Rewards Points

Total members earn 1% back in rewards on eligible Best Buy purchases, structured as 0.5 points per dollar, with every 250 points unlocking a $5 reward certificate. If you also carry a My Best Buy Credit Card, you can stack another 5% back for a combined 6%. Promotional credit purchases and sales tax don’t earn points.¹⁰³

Shipping, Delivery, and Returns

Free two-day shipping is included on eligible orders with no minimum purchase. Small parcels qualify; large items like major appliances and big TVs are excluded from the free shipping benefit. For major appliances, though, Total members get free delivery and haul-away.⁶¹¹

The return window extends to 60 days on most products. Two exceptions worth knowing: activatable devices like cell phones still follow a 14-day return period (select carriers may offer longer), and Marketplace products from third-party sellers are also excluded from the extended window.¹²

Member Pricing and Perks

Members get exclusive pricing on thousands of items, early access to major sales events, and member-only deals. Rotating promotional perks have recently included a free month of Discord Nitro, up to three months of Apple News+, 30 days of Fubo, and discounts on Mint Mobile service.¹¹

Where It Isn’t Available

My Best Buy Total is sold only in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. It is not available in Puerto Rico or outside the United States. Any home-delivered benefits apply only at the primary address on the account, and stand-alone Pacific Sales Kitchen and Bath Centers, along with Pacific Sales locations inside Best Buy stores, are excluded from membership benefits. A $49.99 fee applies for missed appointments, cancellations within two hours of a scheduled visit, or failing to provide access for in-home work.⁶

Canceling the Membership

You can cancel within 60 days of your initial purchase or renewal for a full refund, minus the value of any benefits or discounts already used. After the 60-day window, you get a prorated refund for the time left in the billing period, again minus benefits used. Cancellation can be done by phone, in-store, or online, and Best Buy can also cancel for non-payment, fraud, or commercial use.⁶

One thing to think through before canceling: every product protection plan tied to the membership ends the moment the membership ends. A $1,200 laptop bought six months ago loses its coverage the day you cancel.⁴

Is Total Worth It Over Plus or Free

Best Buy’s free tier gives you standard shipping and basic account features. The Plus tier, at $29.99 per year, adds two-day shipping, member pricing, early sale access, the 60-day return window, and the 1% rewards rate. Total, at $199.99, keeps everything in Plus and adds the protection plans, 24/7 Geek Squad support, the free computer and tablet services, VIP support, and the 20% labor discount.¹ The $170 gap between Plus and Total is essentially the price of the protection and support bundle. Whether that pencils out depends on how much gear you buy and how often you need help with it; a stand-alone two-year Geek Squad laptop protection plan runs $189.99 on its own, so a single big-ticket purchase can justify the fee.⁹
