What Does the Hyundai CPO Warranty Cover? Deductible & Exclusions

Hyundai CPO warranty coverage has two main pieces: a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, and whatever remains of the original 5-year or 60,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty. Both are measured from the vehicle’s original in-service date, not from your purchase date. A $50 deductible applies per repair visit, and every covered repair has to be done at an authorized Hyundai dealership.1Hyundai USA. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicle Limited Warranty Provisions

What the Powertrain Warranty Covers

The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is the headline benefit of the CPO program. It covers only the parts explicitly listed in Hyundai’s warranty provisions, which fall into three groups.

On the engine side: the cylinder block and head and all internal parts, manifolds, timing gears, timing chain and cover, gaskets and seals, oil pump, water pump, flywheel, oil pan assembly, rocker cover, engine mounts, and turbocharger.

On the transmission and transaxle: the case and all internal parts, torque converter and housing, clutch cover and housing, and seals and gaskets.

On the drivetrain: front and rear axle shafts, constant velocity joints, front and rear hub bearings, propeller shafts, the transfer case on all-wheel-drive models, and the rear differential.1Hyundai USA. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicle Limited Warranty Provisions

If a part is not on that list, the powertrain warranty does not cover it.

What the Comprehensive Warranty Covers

Alongside the powertrain coverage, a CPO buyer inherits whatever is left of the original 5-year/60,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty. The language is broad: Hyundai will repair or replace any Hyundai-manufactured or Hyundai-installed component found defective in material or workmanship under normal use.2Hyundai USA. Hyundai Owners Handbook and Warranty Information In practice, that pulls in electrical systems, air conditioning, audio and navigation equipment, steering components, suspension parts, and other factory-installed systems.3Werner Hyundai. How the Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Protects Car Buyers

Because this is the balance of the original warranty, how much you actually get depends on the car. A three-year-old CPO vehicle with 30,000 miles has roughly two years and 30,000 miles of comprehensive coverage left. A five-year-old car at 58,000 miles has almost none.4Hyundai USA. Some items inside the comprehensive warranty run on shorter clocks. The 12-volt battery is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Paint defects run 3 years or 36,000 miles. Service adjustments stop at 1 year or 12,000 miles.2Hyundai USA. Hyundai Owners Handbook and Warranty Information

Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, and EV Battery Coverage

Certified electrified Hyundais get a separate 10-year/100,000-mile warranty on the high-voltage battery, again counted from the original in-service date.5Hyundai USA. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles – Owner Resources Hyundai guarantees the battery will keep at least 70 percent of its original capacity during that period.6Hyundai USA. For hybrids and plug-ins, the hybrid starter/generator, the hybrid power control unit, and the automatic transmission (including the traction motor) also carry the full 10-year/100,000-mile coverage, and that coverage stays intact for subsequent owners.6Hyundai USA. Hyundai America’s Best Warranty

The $50 Deductible and Where Repairs Happen

Every covered visit under the CPO warranty costs you $50. There’s one carve-out: if the same component fails again after a previous warranty repair, the deductible is waived on the repeat fix.1Hyundai USA. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicle Limited Warranty Provisions

Work has to go through an authorized Hyundai dealer. It doesn’t have to be the dealer who sold you the car; any authorized Hyundai dealership in the United States can perform the repair.3Werner Hyundai. What the CPO Warranty Does Not Cover

Hyundai’s warranty provisions carry a long list of exclusions. The categories that catch buyers off guard most often:

  • Routine maintenance: oil changes, fluid top-offs, filter replacements, tire rotations, and brake pad replacements are on you.
  • Wear items: spark plugs, brake pads and linings, clutch linings, wiper blades, belts, bulbs, fuses, and tires (tires fall under the tire manufacturer’s warranty).
  • External and environmental damage: accidents, collisions, fire, theft, flooding, hail, road debris, salt, chemicals, tree sap, acid rain, rodent damage, and acts of nature.
  • Misuse and modifications: racing, neglect, improper fuel or fluids, unauthorized modifications, aftermarket turbochargers or superchargers, and non-equivalent parts.
  • Commercial use: taxis, rental fleets, shuttles, delivery vehicles, and vehicles used for towing or construction.
  • Title problems: altered or broken odometers, salvage, totaled, or branded titles.
  • Geographic limits: repairs performed outside the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and damage from operating the vehicle outside those areas.
  • Cascading failures: if a non-covered part breaks and takes a covered part with it, the resulting repair is excluded.

Incidental and consequential damages, including loss of time, inconvenience, and commercial loss, are also excluded.7Terry Lambert Hyundai. Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty Form

Roadside Assistance, Rental Cars, and Trip Interruption

Three ancillary benefits ride along with the CPO warranty.

Roadside assistance runs for 10 years and unlimited miles from the original in-service date, with up to six free events in any 12-month period. It covers towing to the nearest Hyundai dealer, battery jump-starts, flat tire changes, lockout help, and up to three gallons of fuel delivery.5Hyundai USA. Rental car reimbursement pays up to $35 per day for up to 10 days when your car is in the shop for a covered powertrain repair. The first day of the rental is included.4Hyundai USA. Trip interruption reimbursement kicks in if a covered breakdown strands you more than 150 miles from home and forces an overnight stay. Hyundai covers meals, lodging, or alternate transportation up to $100 per day for a maximum of three days, capped at $300 per incident.5Hyundai USA. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles – Owner Resources

If You Sell the Car

On a standard new Hyundai, the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty drops to 5 years/60,000 miles once the car passes to a second owner.6Hyundai USA. Hyundai America’s Best Warranty Buying CPO restores the full 10/100,000 powertrain term for you as the CPO buyer. At least one authorized Hyundai dealer states the CPO warranty is transferable to subsequent owners, while recommending you confirm transfer details and any fees at the time of purchase.3Werner Hyundai. How the Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Protects Car Buyers Hyundai’s own warranty documentation does not spell out transferability of the CPO-specific powertrain coverage clearly, so ask the selling dealer in writing if resale is on your mind.

Make Sure It’s Actually CPO, Not Select Used

Hyundai runs a second used-car program called Hyundai Select Used (HSU) that is easy to confuse with CPO on a lot but comes with far thinner coverage. HSU is for older or higher-mileage vehicles: 6 model years old or newer with 80,000 to 120,000 miles, or 7 to 10 model years old with up to 120,000 miles.4Hyundai USA. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles

Under HSU, the powertrain warranty is 90 days or 5,000 miles from the retail sale date, not 10 years/100,000 miles. Roadside assistance lasts 90 days. Rental reimbursement runs five days instead of ten.8Boucher Hyundai. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles and Select Used Overview The hybrid/EV battery warranty is the same 10 years/100,000 miles under both programs. Before signing, confirm on paper that the car is enrolled in the Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles (HCUV) program if that’s what you’re paying for.

For eligibility, the CPO program requires a vehicle no more than six model years old with 80,000 miles or fewer, a clean title verified by a complimentary CARFAX report, and no frame damage, salvage branding, or odometer issues.4Hyundai USA.
